10 Good Eating Habits | Eating for the Season | Cool August Breeze

Mid August - A cool breeze beneath my bedroom window at four am wakes me up. I put on a pair of socks enjoying the crisp relief from the dog days of summer. Later on at lunchtime I notice my cravings for fresh green vegetable suddenly subsiding for heartier root vegetables. Autumn is approaching! The shift in cravings is a sign that temperatures are subtly shifting direction south. When blood vessels are cold they contract pulling fluids from the surface of the body to the core. With access to more energy, the stomach gets hungry for heartier meals. In contrast the skin and colon dry out. After a summer of roasting and toasting under the hot sun bodily fluids are at a minimum. It's a critical time to replenish vital energy, fluids and ground Vata well in advance of colder temperatures. Avoid drying or constipative foods if you live in a late summer dry climate. Daily oil massages will keep your skin and complexion smooth and supple. Vata types especially can drink water with lime and salt in the morning.
