How to Make Avocado & Coconut Milk Ice CreamSERVINGS: 4 PREP TIME: 120 MINUTES COOK TIME: 0 MINUTES SKILL LEVEL: EASY
INGREDIENTSSKILL LEVEL: EASY
PREPARATION OF THIS HEALTHY RECIPE
Step 1: Begin the night before by chilling your two bowls and the blender vessel bowls in the freezer overnight, - one bowl for mashing the avocado and the other, preferably lidded, to serve as your ice cream container. Place all ingredients in the fridge as well so they will be as cold as possible the following day. The ingredients should not be frozen, however.
Step 2:Cut the avocado in half lengthwise, remove the seed, use a spoon to scoop the pulp into the frozen bowl. Mash and mix into a smooth consistency.
Step 3: Add mashed avocado, coconut milk and raw sugar or honey into the cold blender. Blend on high forming an emulsion.
Step 4: Pour the blended avocado ice cream into the frozen, lidded bowl and leave in the freezer until the ingredients begin to solidify into ice cream. For best results, stir the ice cream every 15 minutes to break up ice crystals to form a creamier consistency.
Step 5: Once solidified, scoop and serve yourself this homemade delight!

CLINICAL AYURVEDIC REVIEW
I scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream!I look back to childhood summers and remember sunny days that stretch on for what seems like forever in a child's mind. Those summer days are punctuated in my memory with exclamation points made of balls of ice cream rolled and stacked neatly upon waffle cones. As an adult, however, I find myself looking for healthier and more wholesome options to satisfy this childhood craving. Avocado & Coconut Milk Ice Cream is the perfect, creamy treat to indulge this hankering; And even though it is a healthier option than traditional ice cream, it is, indeed, indulgent.
A bowl of pale, spring green Avocado & Coconut milk ice cream in your hands cools your palms, and summer's warmth eases a bit, already feeling refreshed by the soft color and chilled ceramic resting gently in your hands. You take your first bite, and it begins to melt into a thick cream, sweet and fresh. You close your eyes as you enjoy the sugars suspended in rich, slightly tropical coconut, blending seamlessly into the buttery green flavor of the avocado. At that moment you think, "life just doesn't get much better than this." What is Avocado & Coconut Milk Ice Cream?Creamy avocados are a popular centerpiece for smoothies in Morocco, creating a decadent milkshake-like treat. This Moroccan delicacy is popular during Ramadan as a fast-breaker. It is made by blending avocado with milk and sugar. Oftentimes, dried fruit is added for additional flavor and sweetness. Mixing avocado with coconut milk and raw sugar can play with this traditional Moroccan treat, turning it into a delicious vegan ice cream with a richness and mouth feel that will satisfy any ice cream enthusiast! Nice Cream to Slow Impulsive Summer TempersAs summer rolls in, much like the storm clouds that are abundant this time of year, so does an increase in our passions. The humid, heat rests heavily on your skin, and your internal environment heats up as well, lending to a tendency for hot tempers and ungrounded impulsivity. Avocado & Coconut Milk Ice cream, or "nice cream" as these healthier alternatives have been coined, can be just the thing to give you a moment of cool pause to overcome the chaotic energy of summer.
Both coconut milk and avocado are heavy, nourishing foods that cool your body and mind. They draw in and center the excess extroverted energy that is as abundant as the hours of daylight. The sweet and comforting addition of raw sugar entices you to take a break, a sacred pause, from the heat.
As you begin to feel more centered eating this cooling delight, you may notice the edges of your mood rounding out like the gentle clouds hanging in a softening summer sky at twilight, leaving you feeling nicely refreshed. This "nice cream" can act as an exhale, conjuring a feeling within yourself that is more calm and a little nicer in temperament. A light Heart and A Burdened LiverSummer is a time of joy and excitement. You may find your mood and activity soars as the sun caresses your skin, increasing the mood enhancing vitamin D3 within your body. However light of heart you may feel, though, this time of year can be burdensome to both your liver and digestive system.
The heat of summer can tax your liver as your heart beat increases, siphoning more blood through the liver and kidneys. This blood is pulled toward your sun warmed skin as your body works to maintain a cooler internal temperature. In the process of your blood flushing toward your extremities, there is less circulating in your digestive system, causing sluggish digestion.
It is advised to eat light and cool this time of year. Though Avocado & Coconut Milk Ice Cream is not particularly light, it is a great option as a summertime treat because it is tonifying and cooling to the system, while satisfying and grounding the soaring, light-hearted nature that wants to enjoy all of the bliss the season has to offer.
For already heavy-natured Kapha folks who would like to partake in this refreshing treat, sweetening it with honey instead of raw sugar will help balance this recipe. The addition of fennel or fresh ginger can make it better suited for this constitution; And in Ayurveda, the name of the game is bringing balance and freedom through moderation and intentional ingredients instead of restriction.
Regardless of your constitution, it is paramount to the flavor (and beautiful color) of this ice cream to use a nice, green avocado as your base. Your avocado should be firm, with a bit of give, but never mushy! Avocados oxidize rapidly when bruised, altering the flavor. It is of note that avocados are naturally high in histamine; A brown, bruised avocado has even higher concentrations of histamines and can cause a reaction in histamine sensitive individuals. So get your avocados, fresh, green, and creamy in consistency for the most decadent flavor and texture for your ice cream. Summer Sun, Ice Cream Fun!Ayurvedic ice cream is fun and a healthier option than traditional dairy varieties. This sweet and creamy recipe can satisfy the yearnings of the heart to rekindle memories of hot summer days and a cold scoop of nostalgia. Avocado & Coconut Milk Ice Cream hits the spot to bring in a moment of pause during this busy time of year; And let's be honest, who amongst us couldn't benefit from that!

The Three Doshas / Body Types
According to the biocharacteristic theory of medicine,
people tend to get sick, over and over again, due to habitual causes and imbalances that are unique to the person.
Your body type summarizes this tendency, showing you the 'type' of conditions and imbalances that frequently challenge your health & wellness.
Using body type, you can also identify remedies likely to improve your strength and resiliency.
Your body type identifies physical and mental characteristics as well as your personal strengths and weaknesses.
The calculation of your body type is based on your medical history.
The 3 functional body types
(doshas),
are Catabolic (Vata), Metabolic (Pitta), and Anabolic (Kapha).
Catabolic individuals tend to break down body mass into energy. They are easily stimulated, hyperactive, underweight and dry.
Metabolic individuals tend to burn or use energy. They tend to be rosy-cheeked, easily irritated, focused, driven, and easily inflamed.
Anabolic individuals tend to store energy as body mass. If they store too much energy, they could gain weight easily and have congestion. Anabolic people tend to be stable and grounded.

That's a great question. It's not the ingredients that make food Ayurvedic but how you use them. If a person has a deficiency disorder, ice cream can help build ojas. If their digestion is too hot, ice cream can cool it...
Do you only use the cream part of the coconut milk, granted you're using canned? Or would a regular homemade coconut milk work?
- Jess, Allen park, MI , 08-18-14 ( Reply)
A homemade version would work as well.
