Long workday

Written by John Immel, Asheville, NC

Sitting in a chair for long periods can cause lymphatic congestion and sluggish circulation. Throughout the day, your organs depend on good circulation to stay fresh and clean. A sedentary lifestyle means that your organs aren't getting cleaned properly. The following herbs can help improve circulation during the workday:

  • Tulsi
  • Turmeric
  • Lemongrass
  • Ginger
If you sit in a chair at work, or work in front of a computer, see the article on Sedentary Desk / Computer Job

The workday also creates stress and adrenal fatigue. The following herbs can help restore your adrenal glands

  • Licorice Root (for Vata/Pitta only)
  • Ashwaganda (for Vata/Kapha only)
  • Ginseng
  • Milky Oats
Finally, your mind might need a little pick me up during the workday. These herbs can help improve circulation to the brain and mental acumen.
  • Brahmi
  • Vacha
Vata individuals should drink their teas in almond milk or some other suitably nourishing base. Pitta and Kapha can use water. Some great herb combinations for the work-day are:
  • Tulsi Brahmi Tea.
  • Lemongrass and Ginger Tea.
  • Ginger, turmeric & honey
To sustain a long workday over many years, it is essential to eat healthy meals on time and cook for oneself early in the morning or before bed.

Aggravated Doshas & Qualities

Imbalance Accumulates

Improper food and lifestyle causes balances to accumulate. Ayurveda shows you exactly which doshas and qualities will accumulate in your body. Once these doshas and qualities accumulate too much, they will begin to cause disease. You can reduce an imbalanced dosha or quality by removing things that aggravate it from your diet and lifestyle.

'Long workday' is likely to aggravate the following doshas and qualities. If you have a systemic imbalance of one of these doshas or qualities, Ayurveda would generally recommend removing, substitute or lessen the frequency of Long workday.
