Refined sugar

Written by John Immel, Asheville, NC
Refined sugar consumption has increased exponentially. The average American consumes over 150x the amount of sugar eaten just 100 years ago. Refined sugar is highly processed, and, like a drug, wreaks havoc with our metabolism, causing a sugar high, then a crash. It also confuses the taste buds, making bitter taste unpalatable. Refined sugar quickly ferments in the digestive tract and the blood, leading to outbreaks of candida and inflammation. You can experience this fermentation as a foul taste on the tongue within ten minutes of eating refined sugar. It also leaves a trail of mucus in the digestive tract, creating sluggishness. It should be avoided.

Aggravated Doshas & Qualities

Imbalance Accumulates

Improper food and lifestyle causes balances to accumulate. Ayurveda shows you exactly which doshas and qualities will accumulate in your body. Once these doshas and qualities accumulate too much, they will begin to cause disease. You can reduce an imbalanced dosha or quality by removing things that aggravate it from your diet and lifestyle.

'Refined sugar' is likely to aggravate the following doshas and qualities. If you have a systemic imbalance of one of these doshas or qualities, Ayurveda would generally recommend removing, substitute or lessen the frequency of Refined sugar.
