Digestive enzymes become addictive because they replace the function of your stomach. The process is much the same way our muscles atrophy when we stop exercising them. By relying on digestive enzymes, slowly your stomach loses its ability to produce enzymes on its own. Without a change in diet, this will increase your need for digestive help, furthering your dependence on those not-so-innocent supplements.
Although they sound the same, digestives and digestive enzymes work in very different ways. Digestives promote and strengthen stomach function instead of replacing it. Examples of digestives include spices like black pepper and ginger as well as herbal formulas like Digestive Bitters. These spices and formulas improve circulation to the stomach, break up mucus, and stimulate good muscle tone, which all help to keep your stomach strong.
Sometimes, a digestive enzyme supplement can help you recover from an acute bout of digestive distress. Or, temporary use the first few days of travel, when your system is compromised. As long as you discontinue use after 2-3 days, dependency won't develop. Otherwise, you will have to wean yourself from digestive enzymes more slowly.
Imbalance AccumulatesImproper food and lifestyle causes balances to accumulate. Ayurveda shows you exactly which doshas and qualities will accumulate in your body. Once these doshas and qualities accumulate too much, they will begin to cause disease. You can reduce an imbalanced dosha or quality by removing things that aggravate it from your diet and lifestyle.
'Taking Enzyme Supplements' is likely to aggravate the following doshas and qualities. If you have a systemic imbalance of one of these doshas or qualities, Ayurveda would generally recommend removing, substitute or lessen the frequency of Taking Enzyme Supplements.
Key: V = Vata, P = Pitta, K = Kapha. A slash through a dosha means it an aggravated dosha. To learn more about the symbols above, click on them.
