Just as you catch common colds in Autumn, you catch 'common hots' in the spring, or more accurately 'damp hots.' In Spring, heat causes lymphatic congestion and buildup of water that leads to puffiness, thick mucus, and upper respiratory stagnation.

Warm Spring Days Make you Sick

In the Spring, it's the warm days that make you sick. After fighting the cold all winter long, your body is unprepared for the sudden rise in temperature. The sudden shift leaves you vulnerable to congestive heat conditions.

From the point of view of the body, March might as well be the hottest month of the year. As your layer of winter fat begins to melt into the blood, it enriches your blood provoking Kapha dosha. The thick blood causes pressure in the ears, upper respiratory congestion and sinus infections.

The symptoms of damp hots are equivalent to common colds in everything but the cause and remedy. The same virus attacks your weakened sinus in both cases. However, with the 'damp hots', you'll feel more achey-ness like the flu, heaviness, and swollen lymph nodes. Mucus congestion will be thick.

Tips to Break up Congestion

  • Avoid oily, rich and sweet foods.
  • Favor bitter greens and vegetables
  • Incorporate diuretic herbs
  • Spice your food with hot, pungent spices, and
  • Conservatively use mild laxatives
