The Components of Total Wellness

Wellness is essentially proper formation of the body, mind and spiritual through right relationship and re-balancing the following appetites.
  • Natural Appetite - Governs natural movement of all matter (the Laws of nature).
    • Described by Physics. Wellness here simply means not rebelling against these laws (God's design).
  • Vegetal / Nutritive Appetite - Governs health of the body through nutrition, growth, reproduction, immunity, etc.
    • Described by Ayurveda / Greek Medicine
    • Qualities (Gunas) - Heavy / Light, Hot / Cold, etc.
    • Temperaments, Doshas
  • Sensitive Appetite - Governs instinctual reaction to circumstances perceived through the senses
    • Described by the passions
    • Concupsiclble Passions - Love/hate; Desire/aversion; Joy/Sadness
    • Irasclble Passions - Hope/despire; Fear/daring; Anger
  • Rational Appetite - Governs free reaction to circumstances based on true apprehension of meaning
    • Described by the virtues / vices
At Joyful Belly, we offer courses in both bodily health and mental wellness.

How is the Study of Ayurveda Similar to the Study of the Virtues?

From the above you can see that, together, Ayurveda & the virtues form a seamless habit based theory of wellness.

The virtues are a mental health model similar to Ayurveda's approach to the body and the natural mental health complement to Ayurveda.

Let's examine the fitness of Ayurveda and study of the Virtues.

Ayurveda is a theory of how habits change the body. The virtues are a theory of how habit changes the mind.

Ayurveda balances the qualities of the body (called gunas). Virtue psychology balances the qualities of the mind (virtues and passions). They are both based in the same philosophical roots.
