Put a few drops of warm sesame oil in your ears every morning this fall. In this windy season, your ears become very susceptible to cold and achiness. As fall winds pick up, you may notice tightness in your neck, occiput, jaw, and around your ears. You may notice your ears ringing, your jaw start to pop and crack. This is a sign that cold wind is causing dryness in your neck, ears, and jaw. A simple practice of oiling the ears, called karna purna in Ayurveda, helps protect your ears from the drying wind. Doing this every day is extremely helpful, especially if you have neck, jaw or ear pain. Make sure to put sesame oil in your ears before a long outdoor event or walk outside, then cover them with a cozy hat. Even if you have no symptoms, you can avoid discomfort by putting oil in your ears before they start.
How to Oil Your Ears:Fill a small dropper bottle with raw sesame oil. Heat up water on the stove and fill a small bowl. Place your dropper bottle in the warm water for a few minutes. Be very careful not to let it get too hot. Always test the temperature on the back of your wrists before putting oil into your ears. It is equally important to never put cold oil in your ears. Lay on your side and squeeze an entire dropperful of sesame oil into our ear. Let it soak in for 5 minutes. To drain, place a towel over your ear tightly and turn onto your other side. Repeat for other ear.Note: Simply dabbing your fingers in sesame oil and rubbing the inside of your ear is a simple version of the above remedy.
