These shorthand abbreviations are commonly used in Ayurvedic texts for efficient referencing. Knowing these will enable you to review the primary source when reading research articles.

You will also use this style when referencing verses from the ancient texts in your homework.

The abbreviations break down as follows:

  • Ca.Su. or च.सं. = Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana
    • Ca is sometimes written Ch
  • Su.Su. or सु.सं. = Sushruta Samhita, Sutrasthana
  • A.Hr.Su. or अ.हृ. = Ashtanga Hridayam, Sutrasthana

Examples

Reference: Ca.Su. 1.25

  • Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana, Adhyaya (Chapter) 1, Shloka 25.

    • In-text reference to a shloka: जन्मान्तरकृतं कर्म वातजन्यं भवेदिति। (च.सं. सू. 1.25)

  • 1. Ca. (च.) - stands for Charaka Samhita (चरक संहिता).
  • 2. Su. (सू.) - stands for Sutrasthana (सूत्रस्थानम्). Sutrasthana is the first section of the Charaka Samhita
  • 3. 1 (१) - Refers to the Adhyaya (अध्याय), or chapter # within the Sutrasthana. In this case, it is Chapter 1.
