Remedies For Balmy Early Summer Weather

In early summer heat, the balmy air leaves a heavy, sticky sensation on the skin and even infiltrates the lungs with thick, moist air as you breathe.

Rain has soaked the earth all spring long, leaving in its wake, rich, moist soils. The earth seems saturated with water. Trees in the forests are heavy and wet to the touch.

On hot days, the brimming moisture and warmth steams into the air.

This kind of air can bring on fatigue, a foggy mind, possible allergies, and even acne.

Effects on Vata, Pitta & Kapha

Vata types may love this time of year because they are frequently dry and cold. The warm, moist atmosphere of early summer can feel like a reprieve.

But for sluggish Kapha and fiery Pitta folks, it can be downright miserable. If the heated disposition of Pitta dominates your constitution, you will feel hot, irritable, & sticky. You may be easily frustrated, as frustration is the most congestive & hot of all the emotions. This rise in frustration is a clue, specifically, that the liver is congested.

If Kapha predominates your constitution, you will feel heaviness in your limbs, much like the water-logged trees, and will feel exhausted. Your skin may be puffy and retain water like the leaves, and instead of frustration, you will feel foggy & lethargic.

Remedies

For relief, dry out any excess moisture with diuretic herbal teas like chamomile, hibiscus, and mint. Eat diuretic grains such as barley.

The famous Ayurvedic formula of cumin, coriander, and fennel tea is great diruetic for Kapha puffiness.

Diuretics can help you feel light and clear headed instead of heavy and foggy-brained.

Hibiscus tea, pomegranate, jicama, & rose petals are also astringent, helping to dry out tissues. Alfalfa sprouts and beans are also astringent.

Serve these teas chilled to balance out the heat of the season within your body.

In your diet, bitter greens like kale and red leaf lettuce, and red, blue and purple berries are smart food-as-medicine additions to your diet, as these can reduce liver congestion, inflammation, and water retention.
