We all know that after a few months of dreary, soggy weather and next-to-no sunlight, a mild sadness may begin to set in. When mood is low and the sun is down, traditional cultures have turned to herbs to improve their low moods and make spirit bright. The following herbs have been traditionally used in western herbalism as well as Ayurveda to help alleviate mild or seasonal depression.*
Brahmi is one of the foremost mental rejuvenative herbs in Ayurveda. It helps promote the intellect and enhance mental performance, but can also be helpful in the case of a low winter mood. It also works on regulating the nervous system as well as promoting healthy skin and hair growth. It is a great tonic for Pitta-constitutions, but can also be helpful for Vata and Kapha.
St. John's Wort blooms with bright little yellow flowers, insinuating its ability to lift mood. In most areas it is considered a weed, but it has traditionally been used for mild depression for thousands of years. It is actually the #1 antidepressant for depression in Germany. Along with its antidepressant activity, St. John's Wort is analgesic (pain relieving), antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and a diuretic.
Low agni or depressed circulation can sometimes lead to depression, especially in Kapha individuals. When circulation is sluggish and depressed, the blood is difficult to circulate and does not get to your brain as quickly or efficiently as it should. This can make your mind feel sad and a little heavy - like it's not "fully there." A warm cup of fresh
ginger tea can stimulate circulation, get your blood flowing, and wake up your mind. Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory and is a cardiac stimulate that has been esteemed for its heart-healthy benefits. Be cautious with using ginger if you have bleeding disorder, or before any major surgery.
