Become a Metabolic Health Coach / Ayurveda Health Counselor in this advanced, Level 2 clinical training in one-to-one health and wellness coaching, available to Graduates of the MHA program (or students with equivalent foundational training in Classical Metabolic Theory).

While Year 1 establishes the philosophical and theoretical foundations of classical metabolic science, this second year is practice-focused. Here, you move from understanding metabolic theory to applying it in real client care. You will refine your ability to conduct structured, holistic metabolic assessments through the lens of Ayurveda — using classical metabolic diagnostic tools (tongue, pulse, skin etc), metabolic flowcharting (tracing patterns from root cause to symptom expression) and identifying appropriate corrective strategies through diet, lifestyle and herbs.

Students deepen their clinical understanding of etiology (causes of imbalance) and pathogenesis (development of disease) while learning to translate theory into effective client consultations.

This program provides the comprehensive training necessary to begin practicing and seeing clients legally in the United States.* Joyful Belly also provides each graduate with access to an online clinic platform, and students begin working with clients under mentorship as part of the program.

Tuition & Financial Aid

Total tuition & application fees for this 1 year classical education course if you register now will be $4,499.

For complete tuition & fee information, please see our course catalog. Application / registration fees are non-refundable unless your application is denied.

Concepts Presented in this 1 Year Course Include:

Classical Diagnostic Tools

Students will develop keen observation skills and acumen using classical methods of examination. Specifically, students will learn how to assess metabolic patterns from:

Clinical Practicum

The culmination of the course is your preparation to work with clients. All aspects of meeting with a client including paperwork, intake forms, legal concerns, note taking, structuring a session, following up, and keeping records will be covered. Students will learn how to take blood pressure & read the pulse and how to use this information clinically.

In phase 2, you will meet with or observe clients in at least 82 personal encounters, with supervision by one of our experienced practitioners. Supervision will be entirely online. Students will also complete another 15 unsupervised, informal assessments.

PROGRAM GOALS - YEAR 2 CLINICAL TRAINING

Graduates of this program are prepared to conduct structured, one-to-one Ayurvedic consultations using classical metabolic assessment methods. Building on the theoretical foundation of Year 1, students develop the clinical judgment, observational skill, and procedural confidence required to work directly with clients.

Graduates are trained to assess constitutional patterns, identify root causes of imbalance, and develop personalized wellness plans grounded in classical metabolic theory. They learn to translate theory into structured consultation, documentation, and follow-up within legal and ethical practice guidelines.

This program prepares students to responsibly begin professional practice within the scope of Metabolic health coaching / Ayurvedic health counselor in the United States.*

Year 2 Graduates are equipped to:

Scope & Limitations of Practice

Graduates of the Year 2 Clinical Training program are qualified to provide individualized Ayurvedic wellness coaching and structured metabolic assessment within the scope of non-diagnostic, non-medical health education. Services may include personalized coaching in diet, lifestyle rhythms, traditional herbal education, and classical metabolic balancing principles.

Graduates may conduct one-to-one consultations, develop wellness plans, and offer educational support grounded in classical Ayurvedic models, provided that all services remain within legal and ethical boundaries for complementary and alternative health practices.

Year 2 graduates do not diagnose disease, prescribe medications, perform medical treatment, or claim to cure or prevent medical conditions. They are not licensed healthcare providers unless separately credentialed. This training does not authorize the practice of medicine, naturopathy (in licensed states), dietetics, psychotherapy, or any other regulated healthcare profession.

Graduates are trained to recognize red flags, complex or high-risk conditions, and situations requiring medical evaluation. In such cases, clients must be referred to an appropriate licensed healthcare professional. Wellness coaching services are complementary and are not a substitute for medical care.

All client interactions must comply with applicable state and federal laws governing health coaching, herbal education, and complementary wellness services.

Learning Style

We take a sophisticated and comprehensive body of knowledge and make it clear, structured, and accessible. The ability to simplify without sacrificing rigor is not a shortcut — it is a hallmark of mastery. A skilled health counselor must understand complexity deeply enough to translate it into language clients can grasp and apply.

Coaches are, at their core, educators. In this program, you will learn not only how to understand Classical Metabolic Theory, but how to communicate it effectively. We will train you to explain metabolic principles in clear, relatable terms your clients can understand and act upon. Drawing from years of clinical experience, we share practical insights, memorable teaching frameworks, and concise explanations you can immediately use in client conversations — helping your clients better understand and experience their own bodies.

About John Immel

John Immel Ayurveda
Drawing on years of research and clinical experience specializing in digestive disorders, John Immel directs the Joyful Belly Institute's educational programs. He is the founder of Joyful Belly, a classical education health & wellness website.

John specializes in the advanced treatment of digestive tract pathology. He holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Harvard University, and uses those analytical skills to advance the field of classical approaches to medicine. He first discovered Ayurveda while working on a public health project in Bangladesh. John's interest in Ayurveda and digestive tract pathology was inspired by a complex digestive disorder acquired from years of international travel.

After witnessing compelling efficiency and improved outcomes of the classical metabolic approach to his own digestive disorder, John was convinced he could help others. He sought a way to introduce classical medicine to the broader American public. This was the genesis of Joyful Belly. Using ingredients familiar from his childhood, John created Joyful Belly to teach the metabolic approach to professional health coaches using familiar ingredients. Joyful Belly proves the classical metabolic approach is the effect, accessible and necessary for everyday health & wellness. His simple, practical and familiar teaching style has helped thousands on their journey to health.

John's love of life, his commitment to the health & dignity of the person, and his humanitarian pursuit of inexpensive health care comes from his Catholic roots and identity. His creativity in the kitchen, and absolute dedication to the warmth & delight of share mealtimes come from his Italian heritage. He is fluent in Bengali and French, and enjoys studying Latin, Italian, and Sanskrit. In addition to his passion for natural health & wellness, John enjoys spending time with his family and studying scripture, two activities which he believes are essential to any health and wellness counselor.

John's Teaching Style

As a teacher, I strive not only to communicate the basic principles of classical medicine, but to bring it to life by sharing my personal healing journey, and the healing journeys I have witnessed as a practitioner. When I am at my best, you will find that my presentations are rich with anecdotes. Despite the seriousness of the topic, you will find I maintain a sense of humor as we discuss the blood and guts of health. This humor often comes at my own expense, which I hope you will enjoy!

Teaching has been a vocation for me since a very young age, and I have taught at various institutions from Harvard University to my home town. As a student of six languages, I am heavily invested in developing my communication and presentation skills, a core skill of any good teacher. Despite my ability to speak as an authority on the topic of classical medicine, especially within the context of digestion, I approach the student teacher relationship as a colleague and facilitator. My approach is not didactic, but inspirational and engaging. I enjoy asking questions as much as giving answers, and recognize that leadership often means giving you the space and freedom you need to draw your own conclusions, with guidance. As much as I love narrating a good story to an audience, I also strive to learn from my students, and am eager to hear your insights and knowledge!

On a more emotional level, I place a great deal of emphasis on psychological obstacles to peak functioning. As an empathetic person, I always strive to appreciate and learn from your perspective and vantage point. I want to know you, and what makes you the person that you are.

Yet, the most important quality and teaching skill I possess is neither language nor empathy. Instead, it is my enthusiasm for a great education. I am eager to give myself fully and passionately to the learning process. This enthusiasm is the true source of my confidence. Why am I so enthusiastic? Where does the boundless energy I offer for teaching come from? The bottomless well of energy I bring to our discussions springs from my great faith in each and every individual's capacity to learn and grow. Teaching is therefore a true celebration for me. This great hope I've invested in teaching is something I will never give up on, which means I will never give up on you!

Commonly Asked Questions

What is the basis of the research? What is the source of the course material and how do you verify accuracy of material learned?

The lectures have been developed from primary and secondary sources, peer-reviewed research, the classic texts of Ayurveda, Chinese and Greek Medicine, and the opinions of experts. Individual teachers frequently innovate based upon their clinical and personal experience, as well as the individual needs of the client. Classical Metabolic Theory is not a research based science but an ancient tradition. Although there have been more studies conducted in recent years, many perspectives you will learn in the course have not been researched or approved by the FDA. Instead, your clients will have to assess any Ayurvedic recommendations you give them to determine their suitability and appropriateness for personal use. Client's individual constitutions and needs do not always conform to statistical norms, even in a Western medical context. Our highly individual approach offers flexibility that science cannot when it comes to working with and assessing the unique imbalances of the client.

Alternative medicine frequently includes alternative spirituality. Will these be a part of this course?

The Classical Metabolic Theory of medicine has its foundations in Aristotle's theory of forms. Aristotle's approach to reality differs from modern science in that it emphasizes a thing's nature as primary, and material secondary. The classical approach to medicine similarly emphasizes the nature of the herb and person over its biochemistry.

We have seen everything from astrology, to religious devotions, to Buddhist meditation, to energy medicine lumped under the umbrella of alternative health & wellness. There is a fine line, for example, between mindfulness practices, and faith-based theories about human consciousness.

Active religious life is scientifically proven to increase happiness, and health. Weekly participation in religious community increases life expectancy by as much as 10 years. This medical fact can seem to justify adding any spiritual belief under the umbrella of health & wellness. The well intentioned merging of different medical and spiritual theories can lead to confusion about classical methods. It can make health & wellness appear exclusive to alternative spiritual seekers, instead of natural and universal to human design. This confusion can alienate individuals with more traditional religious worldviews, or make health & wellness feel exotic, unfamiliar and inaccessible.

At Joyful Belly, we aim to provide an authentic classical education focused on the structured, academic application of health & wellness theory, viewing spiritual healing as a separate discipline outside the scope of the course. Generally, we object to casually adding spirituality superficially to health & wellness courses, and suggest giving it the multi-year seriousness it deserves.

I have been trained in the Western medical system, will this course be accessible to me?

We teach from an experiential point of view, explaining concepts in simple, rational terms that make sense. Our focus is clinical application, and testable methods based on classical metabolic theories of medicine. What you learn in the program are concepts that you can experience in your body. You learn the foundational methods and then experience them directly creating cause and effect connections. This experiential method of inquiry is rational, but not hypothesis testing as in evidence based science. Our students from Western medical backgrounds find our experiential approach creates a more robust understanding of classical metabolic framework.

Will the course include herbs?

Classical Metabolic Theory is the foundational framework from which the traditional field of herbal medicine emerged and was historically developed. Long before modern pharmacology isolated active compounds, physicians understood herbs within a broader metabolic model — evaluating their qualities, energetic actions, and effects on tissue balance.

For this reason, our natural medicine curriculum is fundamentally herbal in orientation. Even when we discuss diet, daily rhythms, or lifestyle practices, these are taught within the same metabolic framework that governs herbal therapeutics. Nutrition, routine, and plant medicine are understood as integrated tools within one coherent system of metabolic regulation.

Students therefore do not study herbs in isolation. They learn how herbal actions correspond to constitutional patterns, pathogenesis, and individualized wellness strategy — preserving the classical integrity of herbal medicine as a structured and systematic discipline.

Can I study on my own schedule? What are minimum attendance requirements?

Each week, you will complete all presentations on your own schedule. Class will meet 3 times each week, including convenient options for every time zone. Coaching calls will be recorded for students who cannot attend.

Our students are highly motivated and lead busy lives. We understand that life events may prevent you, time to time, from completing assignments on time, and have a flexible extension policy as well as other options to reduce the pace of learning to a schedule that fits your life.

See the course catalog for more information.

What if I have a busy job, a rambunctious 2 year old? Can I still take the program if I have to take a leave of absence for several weeks?

This course is designed for the busy professional, is family friendly, and quality of life focused, with the flexibility to complete the course in 3 or even 4 years if needed. Our school and coaching call schedule includes breaks for all major holidays, as well as winter, spring and summer break. Do not cancel family vacation plans - apply for an extension instead.

Will there be enough mentoring / support?

Coaching calls will supplement your self-paced learning during phase 1. Additionally, exercises will be graded and include feedback when needed to improve acumen and student competency. During phase 2, live clinical encounters with clients will ensure all students meet our high academic and clinical standards. The Facebook group also provides an opportunity to voice questions and concerns. Teachers are also available by appointment to address any concerns or questions you might have.
