AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE ON ACRID

Harsh and unpleasant with a biting quality. Frequently hot & bitter. Examples include radish, turnip, and coffee.

Acrid substances are sharp, irritating, and unpleasant to the senses. They have a biting quality that can sting the nose, throat, or stomach—similar to the harsh sharpness of smoke or certain irritating chemicals. In taste, acrid substances often combine bitterness with a piercing, caustic sharpness.

Bitters are considered pure when their bitterness is clean and straightforward, without an off-note or pungent harshness. Acrid bitterness, by contrast, is frequently accompanied by a funky, acrid, or offensive quality—as seen in substances like the rind of Aloe vera.

Acrid substances tend to irritate the stomach lining, often provoking nausea or a gag reflex. For this reason, many traditional emetics—such as lobelia—possess an acrid quality that stimulates the stomach and triggers vomiting.
