AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE ON BUILDS-SEMEN

Herbs that increase the production of semen, often by rebuilding fluids in general.

General Causes of Low Sperm Count

  • Age - Sperm quantity and quality decreases with age.
  • Hormonal imbalances
    • eg: testosterone, FSH imbalances (needed to produce sperm) (S)
    • decreased serum testosterone-to-estradiol ratio.
  • Infection - Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can cause infertility
  • Damage to delicate tubes in ejaculatory system causing blockage of sperm duct (S)
    • Blunt trauma
    • Bicycle seat without a hole in the middle can damage tubes
    • Birth defects
    • Inflammation from diseases => Buildup of scar tissue that obstructs
  • Tumor
  • Radiation Treatment (for Cancer) - can destroy sperm cells

Environmental Causes of Low Sperm Count

  • Chemicals / Endocrine disruptors - such as bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, pesticides
  • Overheating -
    • Sperm cells can die if too hot. eg:
    • Tight-fitting jeans and underwear
    • Regularly bathing in very hot water
    • Heated car seats

Dietary Causes of Low Sperm Count

  • Drug use
    • Anabolic steroids, supplemental testosterone (blocks regular production because body sees plenty in system), THC from marijuana, opiates. Also, many pharmaceuticals.
  • Heavy alcohol use
    • +10-14drinks/wk = decrease testosterone, increases testosterone clearance rate, increases estrogen.
  • Tobacco - negatively impacts sperm production, motility
  • Caffeine - 2-3 cups of coffee a day => increased incidence of abnormally formed sperm.
  • Aflatoxin (from peanuts) - May point to Liver issues generally?
  • Low zinc
    • Zinc concentrated in ejaculate, and important for prostate health.
    • Zinc improves sperm quality and mobility.

Lifestyle Causes of Low Sperm Count

  • Frequent ejaculation - Depletes entire body, sperm reserves.
  • Exercise - Too little or too much
  • Emotional stress - lowers sperm concentration, lowers motility (S)
  • Depression - lowers sperm count, concentration, motility (S)
