AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE ON INTERNAL-DETOXICANT

Liquefies, dissolves, decongests or dislodges internal stagnant toxins. Decongests the lymphatic system.

Internal detoxicants liquefies and move stagnation, dissolve & break up deposits, and dislodge masses. Typically these are lymphatic, blood or liver decongestants. They systemically reduce lumps and/or swelling. Detoxicants transform or alter fluids to a more healthy state (the original use of the word alterative). Detoxicants have one or more of the following actions:

  • Blood thinning
  • Hypolipidemic / Cholagogues - These liquefy the blood by removing fats from it
  • Antilithic solvents - Break up hardened deposits. They are often salty, mineral rich, or contain organic acids.
  • Detumescent / antitumor - Combines detoxicant actions to check benign & malignant neoplasms systemically. Echinaceam Chaparral, Cleavers, Red Clover, Violet, Poke root, Mistletoe, Celandine, Garlic, Yellow dock, Thuja, Pau-d'arco (source: Holmes)

Types of Internal Toxicosis

  • Stagnation - Pair with blood thinners, hypolipidemics, vasodilators, cardiac stimulants.
  • Infection - Pair with antimicrobials, anti-inflammatories, and herbs that lower blood sugar
  • Dysbiosis - Pair with laxatives and probiotics for toxicity due to dysbiosis.
  • Metabolic toxicosis - When the liver and kidney are unable to process metabolic by products, pair detoxicants with hepatoprotectives and diuretics
  • Stony Deposits - When toxicosis and stagnation have led to kidney or gallstones, use antilithic dissolvents.
  • Arthritis - Combine blood thinners and arterial stimulants with anti-inflammatories and analgesics.
See also herbs that stimulate metabolism (pacana), those that stimulate detox organs (liver, kidney, and lungs), and those that encourage elimination (diuretic, diaphoretic, laxative, expectorant, emmenagogue).
