Compare apple (raw) with these other fruits
How Can This Ayurvedic Food Make You Feel Great?
Apples are crunchy and leave a rough feeling on the roof of the mouth, both signs of astringency. Astringency is drying. Thus raw apples provoke Vata and constipation. Cooked apples and apple sauce are more Vata friendly. They are not astringent. Cooked apples are soft, bulk up and soften stool, and relieve constipation. The astringency and cooling quality of apples in general pacifies Pitta. Red apples are sweeter and more Pitta friendly compared to the more tart green granny smith, which is more cleansing for Kapha. The more sour the apple, the more it stimulates glandular secretions, including saliva, enzymes and bile from the liver. People with excess cold in the digestive organs notice heaviness and burping after apples.
Apples are the highest fruit with pectin, a soluble fiber that binds with and removes excess fats, preventing absorption by the body and helping to regulate cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Jonagold variety contains the most pectin of all apples.
