CONSTITUTIONAL NUTRITION INSIGHTS

Recipes with Oats / Oatmeal: Almond Date Granola
Recipes with Oats / Oatmeal: Almond Date Granola
Oatmeal is warm, soft, and gently nourishing. The expression "Feeling your oats" testifies to the use of oats as a tonic for increased vigor. Oatmeal provides steady, long-lasting energy without overstimulating the system, making oatmeal a perfect choice for breakfast or times of recovery and stress.

Easily digestible and satisfying, oatmeal comforts the body while gently rebuilding strength. Its mild sweetness and soft texture, warmth, and sustained nourishment also help calm the nervous system. Oatmeal is excellent for insomnia and anxiety.

High in soluble fiber, oatmeal has a creamy demulcency that soothes digestion and reduces dryness. This soluble fiber, also aids regular elimination and helps stabilize blood sugar, lower cholesterol, and promote heart health. Its moist, grounding nature makes it especially helpful for pacifying vata.

When combined with spices such as cinnamon, this gooeyness also aids expectoration in Kapha.

Be careful with granola bars! Dry oats in any form absorbs moisture from the GI tract, aggravating Vata if there is a lack of adequate secretions from the intestines. Remedy by alternate sips of water and chewing well.

Buying & Preparation

Steel cut oats give the best flavor but take over 40 minutes to cook. Rolled oats are a nice compromise but stay away from instant oats. I find they lack prana and taste like paper, making me suspicious that the vitamins have degraded.

Constitutional nutrition is tailored to the individual. In the kitchen, especially during your family’s formative years, you shape your family's lifelong health.

Understanding your child's constitution is key to raising resilience, instead of wiring in disease. Study constitutional medicine to discover the keys to personalized nourishment.

Rooted in the insights curated from Ayurveda and Greek medicine, constitutional medicine teaches you which foods match your body, so you and your family have true vitality, strength, and balance. See How it Works.

Medicinal Effects of Oats / Oatmeal

Constitutional nutrition systems use biocharacteristics to classify the metabolic nature of food, hebs, lifestyle choices, your body, and disease.

METABOLIC NATURE / BIOCHARACTERISTICS

Metabolic Nature / Biocharacteristics

Ayurveda assesses metabolic imbalances through 20 main biocharacteristics (vital qualtiies). Aggravating them weakens your body and causes imbalance. By knowing which biocharacteristics are habitually imbalanced in your body, you will be able to identify and correct metabolic imbalances before you get sick. Every biocharacteristic has an opposite which balances it (i.e. hot balances cold). You restore balance by favoring diet and lifestyle choices that increase the opposite biocharacteristic.

TASTES

The 6 Tastes

Taste is used to sense the most basic properties and effects of food. Each taste has a specific medicinal effect on your body. Cravings for food with certain tastes indicate your body is craving specific medicinal results from food. Taste is experienced on the tongue and represents your body's reaction to foods. Sweet taste causes physical satisfaction and attraction whereas bitter taste causes discomfort and aversion. Kapha should use less sweet taste while Vata and Pitta would benefit from using more sweet taste. One of the first signs of illness is that your taste and appetite for food changes. The six tastes are sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. Do you crave foods with any of the tastes below?

AYURVEDA BODY TYPES (DOSHAS)

The Three Doshas / Body Types

Ayurveda is a metabolic theory of medicine that explains individual health, tendencies, and disease patterns through the concept of doshas, which can be understood as your metabolic patterns and tendencies.

Each dosha reflects a distinct metabolic nature and describes strengths & weaknesses in bodily function, and how these affect energy levels, digestion, susceptibility to disease, and many other tendencies.

Your metabolic nature not only affects your physical characteristics, but also influences your mental thought patterns, confidence, and enthusiasm.

Ayurveda balances these metabolic strengths & weaknesses to support your body's vitality and prevent recurrent disease cycles. This support is a critical aid, especially in chronic or incurable disease conditions.

The 3 metabolic body types (doshas), are Catabolic (Vata), Metabolic (Pitta), and Anabolic (Kapha).

Through dosha, Ayurveda empowers people to identify metabolic imbalances early, break repetitive patterns of disease, and cultivate habits that support long-term vitality and well-being.

Ultimately, these metabolic patterns also provide a framework for understanding yourself, including body, mind, and spiritual tendencies.

how to use Oats / Oatmeal Ayurvedically

General Usage of Oatmeal (as food)

External use:

When used externally, oats are highly valued for its soothing, moisturizing, and anti-inflammatory properties, particularly for dry or irritated skin. While there isn't a typical serving size like with internal consumption, the amount typically depends on the type of treatment or mask you are making.

Generally, you will finely ground the oatmeal before applying. Boiling 1-2 tablespoons in 1 cup of water may be enough to create a moisturizing liquid for the skin. For a paste, more oats will be needed to cover the same skin surface area.

TRADITIONALLY INDICATED FOR
THESE SYMPTOMS

Oats / Oatmeal may temper these symptoms. The suitability of any food for a condition is highly dependent on the individual. Please see your doctor before using this food to treat a medical condition.

CONTRAINDICATED FOR
THESE SYMPTOMS

Oats / Oatmeal may be harmful or contraindicated for these symptoms. Note this is not a complete list of all possible contraindications. Please see your doctor before using this food to treat a medical condition.

Oats are widely regarded as a healthy and nutritious food, however, there are some contraindications or precautions to be aware of, particularly for certain individuals or in specific health conditions.

Gluten Sensitivity or Celiac Disease: Oats themselves do not contain gluten, but they are often processed in facilities that handle wheat, barley, and rye, which can lead to cross-contamination with gluten. People with celiac disease or severe gluten sensitivity should ensure the oats are certified gluten-free to avoid adverse reactions. Even if oats are gluten-free, some individuals with non-celiac gluten sensitivity may still experience discomfort from oats.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Oats contain soluble fiber, which is generally beneficial for digestion. However, for some individuals with IBS, high-fiber foods like oatmeal may trigger gas, bloating, or stomach cramps. The high fiber content can sometimes cause irritation in the intestines, especially if the person has a sensitivity to fiber or if the oats are consumed in large amounts.

Herb Drug Interaction Risk

Here are some potential herb drug interactions with Oats / Oatmeal. Please see your health care provider for more information.
