Remedies: procedure

Adhipati - Head Marma Point (baihui Gv20)

Organizes and wakes up the mind. Adhipati encourages resolve, steadiness, and forward thinking. Improves posture and lengthens the spine.

How Does This procedure Remedy Improve Wellness?

CONSTITUTIONAL & METABOLIC INSIGHTS

Adhipati lies at the vertex of the head, along the midline of the skull, approximately where a line connecting the tops of the ears crosses the sagittal centerline. Some texts alternatively list adhipati as further back, at the scalp whorl, where the crown chakra is said to lie.

Unlike the crown charka point, which is more disembodied, the more forward location of Adhipati builds alertness but also groundedness. For this reason, we will use the forward location only.

In Chinese medicine, this point is called Baihui GV-20. It is the "meeting of a hundred," a place where the yang channels are said to converge. Gently pressing the point confirms this experience - Adhipati encourages a straight, erect posture with a lengthening of the spine. It encourages a slight head tilt forward, and tuck of the chin.

The psychological effect is increased focus, resolve, and clarity of thought. This point energizes but also grounds and centers - reducing anxiety. It is potentially sharp/intensifying if overstimulated, particularly in someone already tense, driven, overheated, or irritable.

By improving resolve, Adhipati grounds Vata and Kapha but can aggravate Pitta.

A useful felt-sense description would be: "upright, awake, collected, and quietly alert." The traditional uses become more coherent if you think of Adhipati not simply as an "upward" point but as an organizing point.

When someone is heavy, dull, collapsed, mentally foggy, or dispirited, its light and ascending quality explains the traditional use for "lifting the spirit" and clearing the mind.

When someone is scattered or dysregulated, its central position and comparatively stabilizing autonomic effects suggest another role: gathering attention around a vertical axis. That gives you the seemingly contradictory effect of being both uplifting and settling.

When someone is anxious or overstimulated, the objective is not necessarily to add more energy. Rather, Baihui may help organize existing arousal. Human HR/HRV findings and animal stress research are at least consistent with this interpretation.

When there is cognitive fog, neurological impairment, or poor attention, its traditional "clear the mind" indication aligns with its frequent use in cognitive and stroke protocols and with demonstrated changes in central brain activity after stimulation.

Medical studies

Medical research clusters particularly around autonomic regulation, cognition, mood/stress, and neurological recovery.

Autonomic regulation. In a study of 33 patients with depression, stimulation at Baihui was associated with a significant fall in heart rate and an increase in total heart-rate variability during the post-treatment period. This is consistent with improved autonomic regulation and reduced sympathetic dominance.

That fits the traditional paradox of Baihui quite nicely: it can be described as raising and awakening without necessarily agitating. Physiologically, the point may support alertness while simultaneously reducing excessive autonomic arousal.

Stress and anxiety. Recent animal research found that electroacupuncture at GV20 increased oxytocin in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus and blood, while blocking oxytocin receptors eliminated much of the observed anxiolytic effect. This is animal evidence, so it cannot simply be translated into a human clinical claim, but it offers a plausible mechanism for the traditional calming use of Baihui.

Cognition. Baihui appears frequently in acupuncture protocols for cognitive impairment. A small randomized study in post-stroke cognitive impairment found that treatment including GV20 and GV24 plus rehabilitation improved MMSE and MoCA scores more than rehabilitation alone.

Metabolic Impact of Adhipati - Head Marma Point (Baihui GV20)

Classical Metabolic Theory uses biocharacteristics to classify the metabolic impact of food, herbs, lifestyle choices, your body, and disease.

METABOLIC IMPACT / BIOCHARACTERISTICS

Metabolic Impact / Biocharacteristics

Ayurveda assesses metabolic imbalances through 20 main biocharacteristics (vital qualtiies). Aggravating them weakens your body and causes imbalance. By knowing which biocharacteristics are habitually imbalanced in your body, you will be able to identify and correct metabolic imbalances before you get sick. Every biocharacteristic has an opposite which balances it (i.e. hot balances cold). You restore balance by favoring diet and lifestyle choices that increase the opposite biocharacteristic.

TASTES

The 6 Tastes

Taste is used to sense the most basic properties and effects of food. Each taste has a specific medicinal effect on your body. Cravings for food with certain tastes indicate your body is craving specific medicinal results from food. Taste is experienced on the tongue and represents your body's reaction to foods. Sweet taste causes physical satisfaction and attraction whereas bitter taste causes discomfort and aversion. Kapha should use less sweet taste while Vata and Pitta would benefit from using more sweet taste. One of the first signs of illness is that your taste and appetite for food changes. The six tastes are sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. Do you crave foods with any of the tastes below?

AYURVEDA BODY TYPES (DOSHAS)

The Three Doshas / Body Types

Ayurveda is a metabolic theory of medicine that explains individual health, tendencies, and disease patterns through the concept of doshas, which can be understood as your metabolic patterns and tendencies.

Each dosha reflects a distinct metabolic nature and describes strengths & weaknesses in bodily function, and how these affect energy levels, digestion, susceptibility to disease, and many other tendencies.

Your metabolic nature not only affects your physical characteristics, but also influences your mental thought patterns, confidence, and enthusiasm.

Ayurveda balances these metabolic strengths & weaknesses to support your body's vitality and prevent recurrent disease cycles. This support is a critical aid, especially in chronic or incurable disease conditions.

The 3 metabolic body types (doshas), are Catabolic (Vata), Metabolic (Pitta), and Anabolic (Kapha).

Through dosha, Ayurveda empowers people to identify metabolic imbalances early, break repetitive patterns of disease, and cultivate habits that support long-term vitality and well-being.

Ultimately, these metabolic patterns also provide a framework for understanding yourself, including body, mind, and spiritual tendencies.
