AYURVEDIC HERB SUPPLEMENTS

Arjuna Herbal Powder (Terminalia arjuna)

Ayurveda's best heart tonic, also nourishes and clears inflammation from the skin.

How Does This Ayurvedic Herb Supplement Improve Wellness?

CLINICAL AYURVEDIC REVIEW

Although dominantly astringent, Arjuna leaves a tart, pungent tingly aftertaste in the back of the throat. This tart pungency gives arjuna a unexpected blood moving quality.

Arjuna is a traditional rejuvenative and tonic for the heart. It regulates blood pressure, heart rate, and muscle tone. It improves circulation, maintains healthy cholesterol, and reduces inflammation.

Arjuna strengthens skin & vessels, and improves their elasticity. It is thus a potent herb to reduce atherosclerosis and anti-aging. Topically, it speeds the healing process of wounds, including diabetic ulcers and fractures.

Its circulation improving, anti-inflammatory and astringent qualities clear acne and UTI infections. It especially reduces oxidation in the liver (hepatoprotective). Its astringency can help with menorrhagia and spermatorrhea.

Arjuna is traditionally used to promote emotional balance. It is said to mend a 'broken heart' and to impart courage and strengthen the will.

As a cold, astringent blood mover, Arjuna is similar to Manjistha. However, it is more astringent than Manjistha. While Manjistha has affinity for the female reproductive tract, Arjuna is a heart tonic.

Arjuna reduces Kapha in the lungs.

Metabolic Nature of Arjuna

See a complete list of all biocharacteristics.

METABOLIC NATURE

Metabolic Nature

Ayurveda assesses metabolic imbalances through 20 main biocharacteristics (gunas). Aggravating them weakens your body and causes imbalance. By knowing which biocharacteristics are habitually imbalanced in your body, you will be able to identify and correct metabolic imbalances before you get sick. Every biocharacteristic has an opposite which balances it (i.e. hot balances cold). You restore balance by favoring diet and lifestyle choices that increase the opposite biocharacteristic.

TASTES

The 6 Tastes

Taste is used to sense the most basic properties and effects of food. Each taste has a specific medicinal effect on your body. Cravings for food with certain tastes indicate your body is craving specific medicinal results from food. Taste is experienced on the tongue and represents your body's reaction to foods. Sweet taste causes physical satisfaction and attraction whereas bitter taste causes discomfort and aversion. Kapha should use less sweet taste while Vata and Pitta would benefit from using more sweet taste. One of the first signs of illness is that your taste and appetite for food changes. The six tastes are sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. Do you crave foods with any of the tastes below?

DOSHAS

The Three Doshas / Body Types

Ayurveda is a metabolic theory of medicine that explains individual health, tendencies, and disease patterns through the concept of doshas, which can be understood as your metabolic patterns and tendencies.

Each dosha reflects a distinct metabolic nature and describes strengths & weaknesses in bodily function, and how these affect energy levels, digestion, susceptibility to disease, and many other tendencies.

Your metabolic nature not only affects your physical characteristics, but also influences your mental thought patterns, confidence, and enthusiasm.

Ayurveda balances these metabolic strengths & weaknesses to support your body's vitality and prevent recurrent disease cycles. This support is a critical aid, especially in chronic or incurable disease conditions.

The 3 metabolic body types (doshas), are Catabolic (Vata), Metabolic (Pitta), and Anabolic (Kapha).

Through dosha, Ayurveda empowers people to identify metabolic imbalances early, break repetitive patterns of disease, and cultivate habits that support long-term vitality and well-being.

Ultimately, these metabolic patterns also provide a framework for understanding yourself, including body, mind, and spiritual tendencies.

See contraindications below.

TRADITIONALLY INDICATED FOR
THESE SYMPTOMS

Arjuna may be beneficial for these symptoms. The suitability of any herb supplement for a condition is highly dependent on the individual. Please see your doctor before using this herb supplement to treat a medical condition.

CONTRAINDICATED FOR
THESE SYMPTOMS

Arjuna may be harmful or contraindicated for these symptoms. Note this is not a complete list of all possible contraindications. Please see your doctor before using this herb supplement to treat a medical condition.

Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension): Arjuna is known to have a blood pressure-lowering effect. While it is beneficial for individuals with high blood pressure, it could potentially cause low blood pressure or exacerbate hypotension in individuals who are already prone to low blood pressure. If you have low blood pressure, you should use Arjuna cautiously or consult a healthcare provider.

Heart Disease and Cardiac Medications: Interactions with Cardiac Medications: Arjuna may interact with medications used to treat heart conditions, especially those that influence blood pressure, heart rate, or clotting. This includes medications such as beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, and blood thinners. It may either enhance or interfere with the action of these medications. It's important to consult with a healthcare provider if you're on cardiac medications.

Blood Sugar Levels: There is evidence that Arjuna may lower blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes or are on medications that regulate blood sugar (like insulin), you should monitor your blood sugar levels closely and consult your healthcare provider to avoid hypoglycemia.

Surgical Procedures: Since Arjuna can influence blood pressure and may interact with blood-thinning medications, it's best to stop using it at least two weeks before surgery to avoid any complications related to bleeding or cardiovascular function.

Herb Drug Interaction Risk

Here are some potential herb drug interactions with Arjuna. Please see your health care provider for more information.
