Ayurveda Lifestyle Gallbladder Tonic
Doctors remove over 1 million gallbladders each year despite numerous medical studies that show both gallstones and surgery are preventable. In addition to diet and lifestyle choices that support your gallbladder, certain herbs may help prevent discomfort or a trip to the operating room. The herbs contained in this tea are traditionally used to
  • Promote healthy gallbladder function
  • Decongest and cleanse a fatty liver
  • Balance bile chemistry
  • Stimulate circulation
  • Improve fat & cholesterol metabolism

What is Bile?

Bile is the substance produced by your liver that is responsible for helping fat digestion. Though produced by your liver, bile is stored in a pear-shaped pouch that is your gallbladder. Bile gets a bad name for its foul taste when you vomit, but maintaining correct bile chemistry is crucial to your health. Altered bile chemistry can lead to thickening of the bile and formation of stones.

Since bile is responsible for the breakdown of fats, it is the main pathway for cholesterol metabolism. Eighty percent of all gallstones are cholesterol stones, formed when the bile has excess cholesterol or low concentration of bile salts. In addition to high cholesterol in general, unwanted excess cholesterol in the bile has also been linked to hypothyroid, weight gain, low metabolism and high cholesterol in general. A fat-rich diet leads to a fatty, congested liver, which, according to Ayurveda, predisposes one to a Kapha-Pitta conditions like gallstones. Low metabolism can lead to a sluggish gallbladder that fails to empty properly, increasing the likelihood that stones will form.

Liver Congestion & Bitterness

Spring is the most challenging season for liver and gallbladder congestion. While you're preparing the garden and freshening up the house your body is doing some spring-cleaning of its own by shedding winter fat that it will no longer need in the coming warmer months. A congested liver, stagnant gallbladder or thick bile has an emotional effect as well. It can cause a buildup of emotions that can make a person feel like they're ready to pop. The gallbladder is associated with envy, bitterness, contempt, and irritability. When Kapha alone afflicts the gall bladder a person may feel timid and under confident. Releasing the gallbladder can release these negative emotions and increase confidence and courage.

Visually, gallbladder stagnation appears as a slightly dark or greenish hue around the eye in a Kapha Pitta constitution. Low grade liver toxicity and gall bladder stagnation may be experienced as a mild discomfort under the right ribcage.

Increases These Qualities (Gunas)

Ayurveda helps you assess how you feel through the 20 main therapeutic feelings or qualities called gunas. Through the gunas you can articulate, experience and develop sensitivity to the signals your body sends you. Imbalanced gunas are the root of your imbalances. Every guna has an opposite which balances is (i.e. hot balances cold). You create balance by favoring diet and lifestyle choices that increase the opposite guna.

TASTES
Digestive Effects Help

The 6 Tastes

Taste has meaning in Ayurveda, and brings physical and emotional changes to your body. Taste is experienced on the tongue and is your body's reaction to foods much in the same way that your emotions are mental reactions to experiences. Sweet taste causes physical satisfaction and attraction whereas bitter taste causes discomfort and aversion. Kapha should use less sweet taste while Vata and Pitta would benefit from using more sweet taste. One of the first signs of illness is that your taste and appetite for food changes. The six tastes are sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. Do you crave foods with any of the tastes below? Food and herbs with the following tastes could aggravate your symptoms.

DOSHAS
Digestive Effects Help

The Three Doshas / Body Types

Your body type shows how your strengths, as well as how your body typically goes out of balance. It also shows how your body responds to the environment. Your body type is comprised of certain qualities and affects every part of you - your physical and mental characteristics as well as your personal strengths and weaknesses. This is because your body type is based on how your body uses energy. Ayurveda has 3 body types (doshas), called Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Vata spends energy. Pitta burns energy. Kapha stores energy. Vata people tend to be easily stimulated, hyperactive, underweight and dry. Pitta people tend to be hot, focused, driven, and easily inflamed. Kapha people are heavy, stable and grounded, but if they store too much energy, they could gain weight easily and have congestion.

Unfortunately, my gallbladder has already been removed - years ago - before I learned to exercise my rights to health and stopped giving away my power to the medical industry. Can this tonic help me? By keeping the liver clear?

- PattyD, MA, 08-08-12 (Reply)
Yes, the herbs in this formula were chosen to assist the body with the functions that your gall bladder used to perform. If your gall bladder has been removed, supporting your body becomes all the more important.

Can thick bile or gallstones cause low stomach acid/gastroparesis? Or does adrenal exhaustion cause low stomach acid/gastroparesis? Trying to figure out what's causing my conditions as I am a slow oxidizer thru hair mineral analysis, and a Vata-Kapha.

- Dawn B., Kaneohe, HI, 09-03-12 (Reply)
Are tonics cleansers?

- Sally, St. louis, MO, 04-15-13 (Reply)
Tonics are loosely used to describe formulas that improve function, in this case gall bladder function. In eastern medicine, tonics are often used for building strength (for example, with eggs or red meat).

Which formula or tonic would be better to flush out small Gall Stones? Very sensitive to Aloe Vera juice (Pitta/Vata).

- Alyssa, Sorrento, LA, 05-09-13 (Reply)
I just realized this says to use aloe vera juice. I don't have any and was wondering if I could mix it with hot water or something of the sort. Thanks!

- Jess, Allen park, MI, 06-10-13 (Reply)
Yes, hot water would work fine. Thanks!

What are the herbs in this formula? I'd like to see them displayed on the website. Thank you!

- Vivian Wood, 01-30-14 (Reply)
This formula says it's not for the Vata, which I very much am, but the description of this formula is spot on with what I have been dealing with for a couple of years now. Do you have any recommendations for gallbladder/liver help for Vatas?

- Mary Ellen Zang, Madison, WI, 10-14-14 (Reply)
Hi Mary, thanks for your question. I often recommend an altered vata pacifying diet and routine when dealing with two doshas that are out of balance. That said, it's very difficult to recommend a formula without knowing your specific health history and imbalances. You may consider scheduling a consultation so we can create a custom formula for you- for instance, the gall bladder cleanse with additional herbs to calm vata. Hope that helps!

The individual herbs are listed where it says, "contains:" above. Do you have any other questions?

I have been struggling with digestion, pain, weakness, and mental fatigue ever since I had pancreatitis and gall bladder removal almost 8 years ago. I really need help. I have GERD, bouts of dizziness and diarrhea after certain meals and lately have been very bloated and having to burp and pass gas constantly. It's painful. Can you recommend an Ayurvedic practitioner in my area or can I do a telephone consultation with someone? I really need help. Nicole from Oakland, CA

- Nicole, Oakland, CA, 11-13-14 (Reply)
Nicole, you can most certainly schedule a consultation with us. We usually do them via Skype. The link to schedule is here:https://www.joyfulbelly.com/wordpress/ayurveda-consultation/?lnk=273

Could you tell me what do I need to do to detoxify gallbladder and liver while having a Vatta imbalance? most bitters cause/increase gas, bloatiness, etc....

- Alejandra Lee, San dimas, CA, 03-12-17 (Reply)
This is a challenging question to answer with such little information about you. Please consider signing up for a one on one consultation - we're currently running a half price special, so initial consults are only $60.
