How Does This Ayurvedic Recipe Improve Wellness?

CLINICAL AYURVEDIC REVIEW

Cooked apples are soft, easy to digest and as comforting as a warm hug on a cold November day. We've added even more warmth in this recipe with a little pungent horseradish root. This fiery punch transforms a traditional dish adding some flare, excitement and just the right amount of kick.

A Great Digestive

The fieriness of horseradish comes from its combined pungent and bitter tastes. Horseradish awakens the senses, stimulates the the body and warms the abdomen due to its light nature. It stimulates the release of gastric secretions, strengthening a sluggish digestive system.

Simple & Cleansing

A diuretic, horseradish encourages the release of excess liquid from the body - a great choice for those experiencing water retention or Kapha imbalance. Adding this flavorsome root to your meal will warm you up from the inside out and leave you feeling lighter. The cleansing nature of cooked apples is enhanced by the high fibre content and soft texture which alleviates constipation, promotes a clean colon and balances Vata. Cloves soften the stools encouraging healthy elimination. They are also an expectorant, meaning that they work to draw out excess mucus . Blocked sinuses? This satisfying snack should open you right up!

Metabolic Nature of Horseradish with Apple

See a complete list of all biocharacteristics.

METABOLIC NATURE

Metabolic Nature

Ayurveda assesses metabolic imbalances through 20 main biocharacteristics (gunas). Aggravating them weakens your body and causes imbalance. By knowing which biocharacteristics are habitually imbalanced in your body, you will be able to identify and correct metabolic imbalances before you get sick. Every biocharacteristic has an opposite which balances it (i.e. hot balances cold). You restore balance by favoring diet and lifestyle choices that increase the opposite biocharacteristic.

DOSHAS

The Three Doshas / Body Types

Ayurveda is a metabolic theory of medicine that explains individual health, tendencies, and disease patterns through the concept of doshas, which can be understood as your metabolic patterns and tendencies.

Each dosha reflects a distinct metabolic nature and describes strengths & weaknesses in bodily function, and how these affect energy levels, digestion, susceptibility to disease, and many other tendencies.

Your metabolic nature not only affects your physical characteristics, but also influences your mental thought patterns, confidence, and enthusiasm.

Ayurveda balances these metabolic strengths & weaknesses to support your body's vitality and prevent recurrent disease cycles. This support is a critical aid, especially in chronic or incurable disease conditions.

The 3 metabolic body types (doshas), are Catabolic (Vata), Metabolic (Pitta), and Anabolic (Kapha).

Through dosha, Ayurveda empowers people to identify metabolic imbalances early, break repetitive patterns of disease, and cultivate habits that support long-term vitality and well-being.

Ultimately, these metabolic patterns also provide a framework for understanding yourself, including body, mind, and spiritual tendencies.

“I like horseradish, I like stewed apples, but it did not seem to suit me. After this recipe I had cramping/burning sensation under my rib cage. I thought it needed some oil or ghee. I did not put the lemon juice in it because my stewed apples were not very sweet."
“Horseradish is quite heating and pungent, which can sometimes cause digestive discomfort, particularly if Pitta is aggravated or if there's sensitivity in the stomach. Adding a bit of ghee or oil could indeed help to soften the intensity and make it easier to digest. If you'd like to try it again, consider cooking the horseradish with the apples instead of adding it raw, or pairing it with a more grounding ingredient to see if that makes a difference. Thanks for sharing your experience! 😊"
