How Does This Ayurvedic Recipe Improve Wellness?

CONSTITUTIONAL MEDICINE INSIGHTS

The cacao plant genus Theobroma translates to "food of the gods," a name that reflects the intense physiological and psychological effects long associated with chocolate. In pre-colonial Mesoamerica, cacao symbolized life, vitality, and fertility.

Xocolatl (pronounced sho-ko-lah-til) refers to the ancient, bitter, spiced cacao drink consumed by Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Aztecs and Mayans, and is the root of our modern word chocolate. It was a frothy, fortifying beverage made from ground cacao beans mixed with chili peppers, vanilla, and sometimes cornmeal.

Unlike modern hot chocolate, which is creamy and sugary, Xocolatl has a strongly medicinal bitter taste and actually means "bitter water." It was often served cold.

Like coffee, chocolate produces an uplifting spike in dopamine. However, this effect is relatively short-lived and can leave brooding or agitated emotions in its wake. For this reason, chocolate should be consumed in moderation by all doshas.

The bitter, brooding nature of cacao, especially when combined with heating spices such as chilis and cinnamon, can intensify the mind and emotions. Across many pagan religious systems, intense natural substances associated with vitality, virility, and power were often ritualized in ways that involved blood and violence — as seen, for example, in Near Eastern cults that revered bulls as symbols of martial strength and fertility.

In a different cultural context, Aztec religion at times incorporated cacao into rituals that involved mixing it with human blood. While cacao was also widely consumed in non-sacrificial settings, the same religious system that ritually elevated this stimulating beverage also involved the killing of innocent people.

While curiosity about ancient cultures can be genuine and educational, ritual substances do not merely exist within a culture; they can help shape religious imagination, symbolism, and moral orientation. Herbal drinks like Xocolatl are therefore not morally neutral symbols, but participants in a religious imagination that was also ordered toward sacrifice and bloodshed. Modern romanticization of ancient pagan cultures and their herbal beverages therefore requires more than historical curiosity; it requires moral discernment about the spiritual and formative power of what is being celebrated.

Medicinal Effects of Xocolatl - Spicy Aztec Hot Chocolate

Constitutional nutrition systems use biocharacteristics to classify the metabolic nature of food, herbs, lifestyle choices, your body, and disease.

METABOLIC NATURE / BIOCHARACTERISTICS

Metabolic Nature / Biocharacteristics

Ayurveda assesses metabolic imbalances through 20 main biocharacteristics (vital qualtiies). Aggravating them weakens your body and causes imbalance. By knowing which biocharacteristics are habitually imbalanced in your body, you will be able to identify and correct metabolic imbalances before you get sick. Every biocharacteristic has an opposite which balances it (i.e. hot balances cold). You restore balance by favoring diet and lifestyle choices that increase the opposite biocharacteristic.

TASTES

The 6 Tastes

Taste is used to sense the most basic properties and effects of food. Each taste has a specific medicinal effect on your body. Cravings for food with certain tastes indicate your body is craving specific medicinal results from food. Taste is experienced on the tongue and represents your body's reaction to foods. Sweet taste causes physical satisfaction and attraction whereas bitter taste causes discomfort and aversion. Kapha should use less sweet taste while Vata and Pitta would benefit from using more sweet taste. One of the first signs of illness is that your taste and appetite for food changes. The six tastes are sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. Do you crave foods with any of the tastes below?

AYURVEDA BODY TYPES (DOSHAS)

The Three Doshas / Body Types

Ayurveda is a metabolic theory of medicine that explains individual health, tendencies, and disease patterns through the concept of doshas, which can be understood as your metabolic patterns and tendencies.

Each dosha reflects a distinct metabolic nature and describes strengths & weaknesses in bodily function, and how these affect energy levels, digestion, susceptibility to disease, and many other tendencies.

Your metabolic nature not only affects your physical characteristics, but also influences your mental thought patterns, confidence, and enthusiasm.

Ayurveda balances these metabolic strengths & weaknesses to support your body's vitality and prevent recurrent disease cycles. This support is a critical aid, especially in chronic or incurable disease conditions.

The 3 metabolic body types (doshas), are Catabolic (Vata), Metabolic (Pitta), and Anabolic (Kapha).

Through dosha, Ayurveda empowers people to identify metabolic imbalances early, break repetitive patterns of disease, and cultivate habits that support long-term vitality and well-being.

Ultimately, these metabolic patterns also provide a framework for understanding yourself, including body, mind, and spiritual tendencies.

“I really enjoy this recipe. As a Kapha it gets me going in the morning. Question, Ayurvedic notes state: Chocolate is rajasic in nature and should therefore only be consumed in moderation by all doshas. I make half the recipe above and use unsweetened organic coconut milk. Is 1 cup a day considered "in moderation" for my type?"
Natalie Immel Asheville, NC

“Vicki - it's hard to make a specific recommendation for you without a consultation. But, you can always listen to your body to determine if you are consuming this drink in moderation. Rajasic foods stimulate movement and sometimes anxiety, so moderate consumption of these foods for most people is advisable. You can read more about rajasic foods here: https://www.joyfulbelly.com/Ayurveda/herbal-action/Rajasic"
