Acne is considered a hot, oily pitta condition in Ayurveda. When oils build up in the skin and clog your pores the small pustules known as pimples appear. Acne represents a small local infection of the skin.

Acne due to Testosterone

Testosterone makes the skin oily, which can lead to clogged pores. In teenage years, hormones fluctuate rapidly which can cause outbreaks. In these cases, aid the liver in hormone clearance. Anti-androgens may help.

Acne due to Toxins

Alternatively, when the liver is overwhelmed by toxins, the body attempts to release toxins through eliminative pathways, including the skin. Your delicate skin tissue is easily irritated by these toxins, resulting in inflammation, redness, and pustules of toxins.

The source of these toxins is often fermentation in the digestive tract, although other causes are chemical sensitivities, air pollution, irritants in water or skin products, among others. Emotionally, acne is a result of anger and extreme self-criticism.

Acne Due to Stagnation

Lymphatic congestion can lead to toxic buildup in the skin, causing acne. This type is associated with high blood sugar as well as heat.

Acne Due to Dryness

In some cases, acne can be the result of dryness. When you live in an extremely arid climate like a desert, the skin becomes dry, scaly, and flaky. It can even become damaged and aging signs like wrinkles appear at an accelerated rate. Your body may send oils to your skin in order to protect it from the harsh weather, resulting in clogged pores and acne. If this is the case, using coconut oil as moisturizer is the counter-intuitive remedy for oily acne. Your body will learn that it doesn't need to send oils to the surface of your skin as it soaks in the light, nourishing coconut oil. This simple remedy is an easy cure for acne due to dryness.
