ANOREXIA, PAST OR CURRENTWHAT DOES IT MEAN? WHAT'S CAUSING IT? WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Are you prone to a problem with 'Anorexia, past or current'?
Anorexia means a poor or irregular appetite. Anorexia nervosa refers to a psychological disorder where the appetite is suppressed. Anorexia has been associated with stress undereating, perhaps due to low agni and poor digestion. The root of anorexia may also be physical, as poor appetite is often a complication of anemic blood, dehydration, and hypochlorhydria. A person may chose anorexia out of panic of becoming obese or unattractive. They might fear losing control of their weight, even if they recognize their current weight is healthy. The ideal of thinness stems from a compulsion to be light, independent, and unfettered. It is as if thinness is the female counterpart of the American cowboy. A thin woman believes that by controlling her desire (food cravings), she is also master of her destiny. Anorexia nervosa can create long term deficiencies and degeneration in the digestive organs. In particular, anorexia causes gastroparesis - loss of function of parietal cells of the stomach. Generally, easy to digest and appetizing foods are recommended for a person recovering from anorexia nervosa. Gustin is the common hormone responsible for growth and maintenance of all sense organs, including taste buds and olfactory bulbs. Proper functioning of sense organs is essential to creating the desire to eat. In the mouth, Gustin is called the salivary hormone, becomes it is responsible for mouth watering. Gustin is a zinc-metalloprotein, making zinc the primary trace metal for all sensation. All of the sense organs depend on adequate levels of zinc for growth and maintenance. Low zinc is directly related to low gustin, and poor sense of taste and smell. Less than a week of zinc supplement, taste returned to normal for many with limited taste. For more discussion on the topic of anorexia, see Healing After Bulimia and Anorexia. Anorexia is associated with enneagram types 1,3, and 6.
