Bladder infection arises from stagnant urine in the bladder, blood that is too sweet, or auto-immune disorders like interstitial cystitis. Infections are generally a sign of 'sweet, toxicity, heat, and stagnation.'
Sweetness of the blood feeds the bacteria, often e. coli from the intestines.
Toxicity in the blood irritates the bladder and urinary membranes, making them vulnerable to infection. Keeping the bowels clean is thus a significant tool for eliminating UTI. An outbreak of acne, gas or bloating may be an early warning sign that the system is becoming toxic. These early warning signs may be a cue to avoid dairy, wheat and other heavy, rich foods. Use cleansing herbs and laxatives to help with this kind of UTI.
Cross-infection - Vaginal dysbiosis, pH levels, sexual activity, and poor personal hygiene can lead to infections of the urinary tract. E. coli from the intestines can seed the infection of the urinary tract. Antimicrobials, probiotics, immune stimulants and balancing pH can help.
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) can be a significant factor causing UTI. Women who experience UTI after intercourse should drink a glass of water before and after sex. BV and UTI may increase around menopause, as the depletion of estrogen thins mucus membranes. In this case topical estrogen creams and shatavari ghee can help.
Heat in the blood (inflammation) irritates membranes, making them prone to infection. Liver irritating foods like spinach or tomatoes may also increase irritating 'choleric' heat in the blood (bilirubin). Generally, UTI's occur in Kapha / Pitta females with excess of earth element. UTI's are rare in males - and require a doctor's visit to examine underlying pathology.
An antimicrobial diuretic like uva ursi, together with mannose (a sugar in cranberries) may resolve a UTI. See a doctor if there is no improvement within 48 hours, or you see blood in the urine, or have a fever, or mid-back pain.
Pregnancy - A special case is pregnancy, when high progesterone relaxes the smooth muscle of the ureters, causing them to dilate and move urine less effectively. This promotes urinary stasis and reflux, making it easier for bacteria to ascend the urinary tract and cause infection. Muscle relaxants such as magnesium can aggravate this condition.
Stagnation - Any obstructive cause to urination, such as urine retention, prostate enlargement, kidney stones, inflammatory swelling of ureter, etc) can cause stagnation of urine.
Prevailing wisdom suggests 'flushing' the infection by drinking lots of fluids such as cranberry juice. But this can further irritate tissues. Instead, a constant trickle of antimicrobial herbs and immune stimulants, such as uva ursi and echinaceae, paired with soothing diuretics, such as cornsilk or marshmallow, may be preferred.
If the acidity of cranberry juice irritates your urinary tract, try cranberry extract instead, or consider D-mannose, which is less acidic and is commonly used to help reduce bacterial adherence in the urinary tract.
Inflammation / Irritation - Irritation arising from any of the above causes, as well as kidney stones, can lead to infection. Anti-inflammatories, soothing demulcents, restoratives, and vulneraries can help.
Hyperglycemia predisposes to yeast / fungi overgrowth, causing UTI. Causes of hyperglycemia include excess sugar consumption and diabetes.
When symptoms of a UTI are present, but the urine culture is sterile, it may be interstitial cystitis, an auto-immune condition. Food allergens are often overlooked as another cause of UTI. "Whenever I eat food I'm allergic to, my kidneys ache," notes John Immel, founder of Joyful Belly.

BLADDER / URINARY TRACT INFECTION (UTI) IS IN STAGE OF DISEASE #3 - ATTACKING TISSUE
If you have symptoms in this category it means that your imbalances are becoming stronger and weakening your body's resistance.
Most people have a weakness in one or more organs.
These areas of weakness are the 'weak link in the chain.'
They are first to succumb when an imbalance reaches a tipping point.
Repairing imbalances in this category often represent your last opportunity to prevent disease.
At any moment, these imbalances could overwhelm weakened tissue and develop into a disease.
You may feel pain or discomfort in the weakened area.
At this stage you will need to support the weakened tissue with specialized foods and herbs for the weakened tissue.

AVOID DIETS, LIFESTYLES & HERBS THAT AGGRAVATE THESE BIOCHARACTERISTICS
According to Personalized Medicine Systems (Ayurveda and Greek medicine), aggravation of any of these
body types
and biocharacteristics may lead to 'Bladder / Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)'.
Reduce the foods and lifestyle habits that aggravate these qualities (when dystempered).

lifestyle habits should be reduced.
Symptoms Tell A Story
The first step to healing is learning patterns from your symptoms.
Symptoms are clues that reveal underlying imbalances.
Symptoms show you where your body is weakened.
Ultimately, all disease has a root in tissues too weak to defend itself.
Ayurveda describes these patterns of weakness using doshas & biocharacteristics.
If you notice a biocharacteristic or dosha appears next to many of your symptoms,
it helps you establish a pattern that may be systemic.

HOW DOES AYURVEDA WORK?
Ayurveda starts by identifying your body type,
which identifies certain tendencies in your body to get sick (as well as identifying your strengths).
It uses body type to determine the likely root causes of your disorders.
Next, Ayurveda analyzes the nature of your disorder.
It fits all your signs and symptoms into a pattern, expressed as a combination of biocharacteristics (gunas).
For example, you may have a heat disorder, a cold disorder, or an oily disorder, etc.
This simple categorical approach shows you how to correct systemic imbalances and strengthen your body as a whole.
On Joyful Belly, we've created an extensive categorization of food so you can easily match food to your imbalanced biocharacteristics.
By eating an optimal diet that balances your biocharacteristics, your whole body is strengthened
and the conditions that created the disorder are removed. Once the root causes of the disease
are removed, the disease lessens in strength or disappears altogether. Additional remedies -
such as herbs and lifestyle practices - focused on the specific disorder, can greatly enhance
your healing.
