People who are easily bored find life and the world generally insufficient for their ambitions. This in some sense is a rejection of the way things are naturally. So a bored person feels the need to make life more exciting than it is. Boredom amounts to unhappiness and dissatisfaction with truth, which ultimately is a bitterness towards the creator of life and truth, God. This is why being bored, on some level, means being bored with God - the designer of nature.
On some level, everyone experiences this dissatisfaction in the beginning stages of their spiritual journey. The entire spiritual journey IS ultimately the quest to enjoy life, and the author of it. Before we come to realize this, individuals want the world to resolve around the pressures of their desires.
Happiness, on the other hand, is achieved when one comes to desire reality (how things actually are), and its designer. The lack of effort to contemplate one's happiness, rested in the truth, is the source of all bad decisions (sin).
Reshaping of one's will to will of the One who made us leads to appreciating creation instead of rejecting it (as boredom does). Appreciation of the truth and nature of things create a stable, lasting satisfaction with existence. Appreciation of God is therefore THE spiritual solution to boredom. Happiness IS tempering your will to the will that created all that is.
So how does one establish a habit of contemplating their own happiness in reality? To remedy boredom, add the following 10 minute, 2 step process at the beginning of each day. 1) What is your vision of the author of creation?, 2) How do you act / respond to that call?
Some practical questions:
Why the author of creation instead of creation itself? Because creation is not yet perfect, but is a journey toward the hopes and wills of the one who made it. So happiness is perfected there.
Why at the beginning of each day? To achieve any goal in life, you must reprioritize your acts to best achieve your goal. The best time to proactively prioritize acts leading to your own happiness is before the pressure of the day distracts you from them.
What is your vision of the author of life?
Consider everything you know about the designer of life and creation, and paint a picture of this in your head. For example, how does God reveal He loves you? How does God reveal His generosity? How does God reveal His desire for human togetherness? His love of nature? Paint a picture of Him doing all of these things in your mind.
Remember, happiness is appreciating the designer of reality, and reshaping your desires to this designer. So your vision is, ultimately, the vision of your own happiness.
Example: As a Christian, I picture Jesus Christ in a beautiful church healing, feeding, and enjoying the many people who surround Him. He is laughing and appreciating them, with arms open to welcome them. They are enjoying Him as well. I picture His father above, who enjoys watching, with a warm heart, His son reveal His love. I picture the Holy Spirit as many beautiful doves coming from God to Jesus Christ, and back again. Surrounding the church is a beautiful village of people, and the backdrop is a pastoral setting.
What is your vision of the spirit behind creation?
How do you respond to your own vision?
How can you better act in accordance with your newfound appreciation of reality? This step is the essential reshaping of your will and desires to the will of the One who made you, which is the ultimate, on the level of your soul, relief to boredom.
Example: My current spiritual goal is giving one gift of natural beauty, and one gift of togetherness, to the world every day. This can mean tending the garden, and sitting down for tea with my wife. Or, it can mean writing down some beautiful thought and tracking it to the fridge, and playing a boardgame with my kids.
