A cough may be caused by a respiratory infection (often viral but sometimes due to bacteria). Examples include the common cold (rhinovirus), rsv, coronavirus, and the flu.

Early Stage

In early stages, and even before you get sick, antivirals may help

• Elderberry syrup
• Rosemary, garlic

Acute Phase

Thick mucus is generally a sign of "sweet blood". Blood that is high in sugar, fats, or proteins is sweet blood. If you get thick mucus, reduce sweet taste in your diet.

Stay well hydrated to ensure your body can easily clear toxic buildup from the immune system battle. You should be peeing at least once every two hours throughout the illness.

The cough may be wet (with mucus) or dry (without mucus). Coronovirus causes a dry cough, for example.

A dry cough can be a sign of irritation in the throat (true dry), or thick, difficult to expectorate mucus (false dry). In all cases, use a counterirritant to soothe the throat, not creamy foods (like ice-cream):

Add lemon and honey to increase thin, watery secretions that make expectoration easy:

Add astringents which literally break up mucus strands, liquefying them

• Cinnamon, cloves

Open up bronchial tubes with bronchodilators:

• Essential oils on chest - lavender, eucalyptus, and chamomile rub.
• Taking aromatic herbs internally - cardamom, raw garlic, holy basil, osha.

Antitussives can reduce cough

• Black cherry, coltsfoot, Mullein, Gokshura

Putting all of this together makes a nice tea during the acute phase

• Ginger, Cinnamon, Clove & Mullein tea with lemon, and honey

Individuals that run low fevers may need to boost heat and immune activity by dressing warmly. For those who run too hot (like me), I find I heal more quickly by reducing my temperature and avoiding heavy clothing.

After the Acute Phase

Bitters and sours can gently flush the liver and clean up residues and byproducts of inflammation and immune activity:

• Kale, cilantro, lemon

As lungs are slow to heal, you may need to continue taking the above teas for several weeks. Vulneraries may speed up respiratory healing after the infection has passed.

• Mullein, Coltsfoot, Licorice
