AYURVEDA PERSPECTIVE ON DARK BROWN STOOL

Stercobilin is the chemical responsible for the brown color of human fecal material. When stool sits in the colon too long, it becomes smaller, drier, and more concentrated, thus darker. You can test colon transit time by eating a cup of well cooked beets. Wait for the stool to turn red, then back to normal color. The time between ingesting beets and the stool returning to normal color is the transit time of the colon.

John's hobbies & specialties include advanced digestive disorders, medieval Catholic philosophy, & botany. He holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Harvard University. His wife and family of 7 kids live in Asheville, NC.
