True unity is possible only when individuals submit to something greater than themselves. The greatest unity arises from a shared ultimate concern (usually expressed religiously or politically).

Marriage, ultimately, is partnership for the creation and raising of new life (the child). In marriage, submission to the divine author of life unites the spouses towards the creation and nurturing of life.

While love is an important ingredient in the discernment of marriage, once two people are married, they share a covenantal bond - a marriage vow creates a kinship bond that cannot be undone. Many divorced individuals begin to recognize this soon after the divorce - at all major life events involving children they must cooperate and endure one another.

The preservation of marriage requires both submission and appreciation including in the face of adversity and betrayal.

Divorce replaces appreciation with bitterness, and submission with assertiveness. It especially wounds a women's ability to respect men, and a man's ability to cherish a woman.

The bitterness associated with divorce stresses the liver and the heart. After a divorce, or even a bad breakup, attend to these organs.

Tincture of milky oats can help restore calm. Bitter herbs such as guduci can help cleanse the liver in Kapha individuals. Coconut oil can nurture the liver in Vata individuals.

Authentic strength arises when a person has a strong foundation in which to place their faith, hope, and love. Marriage partners that put their faith, hope and love in God principally, and one another secondary, greatly relieve the pressure on their spouse.

In some circumstances, separation of partners may be necessary (as in domestic violence), however this is different from divorce. In other circumstances, the marriage was never valid (as in forced marriages).

Authentic healing from divorce requires re-committal to the essence of the marriage vow - the commitment to will the good of another. Praying for one's spouse following a divorce is the first and primary act to begin the healing process on a spiritual level.
