A dry cough is a cough where lung tissue is void of mucus. The sound of a dry cough is raspy. Irritation of the upper respiratory tract, as well as inhalation of dust could create the urge to cough. Oddly, when a person relaxes or breathes slowly it stimulates the vagus nerve, which could ellicit a cough. Stimulation of the ears sometimes leads to coughing as well (Arnold's reflex).

Many viruses and bacteria benefit by causing their host to cough, which helps to spread the disease to new hosts.

Treatment

Dry cough is treated with sours, antitussives and demulcents that moisten and soothe the back of the throat. Favor moist, oily, warm soups. Heat will relax the lungs. Clear the colon in cases where ama from the colon is irritating mucus membranes.

Antitussives include coltsfoot, comfrey, horehound, mullein and wild cherry bark. Consider licorice tea with a dropperful of black cherry bark.

Treat the underlying condition with immune stimulants and antivirals.
