Watching TV, your hand invisibly dips into the popcorn bowl. The sandwich you don't remember eating at the stoplight on the way to a meeting: what did it taste like? The piece of cake you ate, semi-slumbering, in the middle of night.

Whenever food is within easy reach, as soon as you're distracted or not paying attention, you'll find your hand snatching a few bites. Food is too tempting, especially if it is sweet or delicious. Exhaustion, emotions, eating while half asleep in the middle of the night, and many other factors also lower your resistance to eating, to the point where you eat only semi-conscious of what you are doing.

Yet, eating without realizing it can make you suffer from eating foods you don't really want, or larger portions. Ayurveda suggests that removing distractions and paying full attention while eating is the best weight loss program.

If you struggle with unconscious, mindless eating, keep snack food in hard to get places, such as a place in the cupboard that requires a stool to reach. If you find yourself standing around the kitchen or in front of the fridge, just sitting down somewhere away from food can draw you out of the moment and brings awareness to the unconscious impulse.

Establish eating habits before they get out of control. A good technique might be to make yourself sit down whenever you start to eat something. You might also try taking a few deep breaths, drinking a glass of water, making a cup of tea, going for a walk, or calling a friend. Experiment and find a method of reawakening awareness that works well for you.

It is important to recognize that eating without realizing it is a form of emotional eating , although it may not be immediately apparent. Any maladaptive relationship with food that seems emotionally or unconsciously motivated is worth your attention and exploration. Discovering why you tend to eat without realizing it can lead to profound personal insights and increased self knowledge of your emotions and general well-being.

Ayurveda strengthens the body while opposing disorders. It takes a holistic, systemic approach that looks at the whole body. HOW DOES AYURVEDA WORK?

Ayurveda starts by identifying your body type, which identifies certain tendencies in your body to get sick (as well as identifying your strengths). It uses body type to determine the likely root causes of your disorders. Next, Ayurveda analyzes the nature of your disorder. It fits all your signs and symptoms into a pattern, expressed as a combination of biocharaceristics (gunas). For example, you may have a heat disorder, a cold disorder, or an oily disorder, etc. This simple categorical approach shows you how to correct systemic imbalances and strengthen your body as a whole.

By eating an optimal diet that balances your biocharacteristics, your whole body is strengthened and the conditions that created the disorder are removed. Once the root causes of the disease are removed, the disease lessens in strength or disappears altogether. About the Author

John Immel, the founder of Joyful Belly, teaches people how to have a healthy diet and lifestyle with Ayurveda biocharacteristics. His approach to Ayurveda is clinical, yet exudes an ease which many find enjoyable and insightful. John also directs Joyful Belly's School of Ayurveda, offering professional clinical training in Ayurveda for over 15 years.

John's interest in Ayurveda and specialization in digestive tract pathology was inspired by a complex digestive disorder acquired from years of international travel, as well as public service work in South Asia. John's commitment to the detailed study of digestive disorders reflects his zeal to get down to the roots of the problem. His hope and belief in the capacity of each & every client to improve their quality of life is nothing short of a personal passion. John's creativity in the kitchen and delight in cooking for others comes from his family oriented upbringing. In addition to his certification in Ayurveda, John holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Harvard University.

John enjoys sharing Ayurveda within the context of his Catholic roots, and finds Ayurveda gives him an opportunity to participate in the healing mission of the Church.
