AYURVEDA PERSPECTIVE ON FEVER (CURRENT)

In Ayurveda, the root cause of fever is metabolic waste, or digestive toxins known as ama. Ama depresses immunity and encourages growth of bacteria, which prolongs the fever. Don't eat ice cream and cheesecake when you have a fever, or the bacteria will be celebrating the blood sugar spike. Remember the saying, "starve a fever."

A fever helps your body fight disease, and it should encouraged unless the fever is too high (above 103.5) or lasts too long (more than 2-3 days). Wrap yourself in blankets and dress warmly to "sweat it out."

Cooling diaphoretics, such as anantamul, coriander seeds, and peppermint help lower body temperature by encouraging sweating and can help reduce a fever if it is too high. In Chinese Medicine, they use the term "open the exterior" in relation to fevers, meaning to push out the pathogen through the skin.

A fever can be dangerous and may be a symptom of a more serious condition, such as meningitis, so medical advice should always be sought if the fever persists or is very high.
