>Causes of frequent cavities
Articles about tooth decay prevention advise regular brushing and flossing of teeth along with avoiding sugary foods like candy and sodas as main ways to stay cavity free.
While these are a good start, Ayurveda suggests we look a little deeper at three underlying causes of tooth decay:
Sweet blood. In Ayurveda, the term sweet describes foods that build and nourish tissue including macronutrients such as protein, carbs and fat.
Unfortunately what builds your tissue is also a favorite of the hungry bacteria that can grow rapidly in your mouth and promote cavities.
If cavity causing bacteria love your sweet blood, regularly brushing and flossing your teeth, while avoiding candy and sodas, will not be enough to prevent tooth decay.
You will also need to adjust your diet to make your blood less sweet and less attractive to these bacteria. And this goes beyond avoiding candy and sodas.
Acidic foods. Eating excess acidic foods (and/or having your teeth in contact with acidic fluids such as vomit or acid reflux) can wear down your teeth.
Toxins. Toxins (ama) have an acidifying effect on the blood which leaches minerals. Toxins also create a ripe environment for bacteria to grow.
How to prevent frequent cavities
Start by reducing intake of or eliminating foods that promote sweet taste in your blood.
Check out this article for a comprehensive list of sweet promoting foods. Especially avoid these sweet foods:
Dried fruits--especially mango which can stick to the teeth.
Soda
Fruit juices
Grains (have phytochemicals that leech minerals from bones). You can reduce phytic acids in grains by soaking and slightly fermenting them before cooking.
Oranges & Orange juice--Oranges are both sweet and acidic and can quickly create cavities. "Love of oranges caused my otherwise healthy daughter to develop a large cavity in a few short months." Always floss immediately after eating an orange. If a piece of acidic pulp becomes lodged between teeth the citric acid can quickly erode enamel.
And see our list (below) of Diet Remedies for "Frequent Cavities," conveniently organized by dosha, herbal action, biocharacteristic, taste or season.
You may also need to reduce your intake of acidic foods and contact with acidic fluids.
Other helpful frequent cavity prevention steps include:
Drinking bone broth to alkalize your blood and help re-mineralize your teeth.
Practicing oil pulling to help reduce the amount of cavity causing bacteria in your mouth.
Flossing after meals, especially if your teeth are close together or you often find food stuck between them. Swish water in your mouth after flossing.
Brushing your teeth in the morning as well as at night.
Saliva is essential for cavity prevention. However, your mouth tends to dry out as you sleep, leaving teeth vulnerable to decay. Brushing in the morning will help remove bacteria buildup over the night.
You can also stimulate saliva production by sipping ginger tea first thing in the morning.
Consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner to help you assess the sweetness of your blood and suggest a diet that supports your dental health.
How to Reverse Cavities Naturally
Minor cavities may heal without drilling into the tooth through re-mineralization of enamel, by following the steps above. Over a several week period you may notice the infected black areas of the tooth becoming whiter and infection free.
Once the cavity reaches into the dentin layer, however, the hole in the tooth will not refill on its own. By following the steps above, you may be able to reduce or even eliminate the amount of drilling needed at the dentist, preserving the structure of the tooth as much as possible. The dentist can then fill the hole with a non-drilling formula.
Reversing cavities naturally takes some commitment and knowledge of details, which can be found in the book Cure Tooth Decay: Health & Prevent Cavities with Nutrition by Ramiel Nagel. Note the book reviews contain many positive anecdotes of healing through this method.
It is important you work under the supervision of a qualified dentist while attempting to heal the cavity using home remedies, in order to ensure the infection is not progressing and further damaging the tooth.

FREQUENT CAVITIES IS IN STAGE OF DISEASE #4 - TISSUE DISEASE
If you have symptoms in this category it means your imbalances have overwhelmed your body's resistance causing a full-fledged disease.
Once imbalance reaches this stage it is more likely to cause acute or chronic conditions.
You might be tempted to focus your attention on fighting symptoms in this category, but dismiss earlier warning signs of imbalance - i.e. symptoms in the stage 1 category.
It is ideal to find and address the root causes weakening your system and remove them first.
This ensures you are not adding fuel to the fire of disease.
Once the root causes are removed, you can work on addressing the disease head on along with strengthening your body.
This typically yields a quicker recovery and prevents recurrence.
Ayurveda's preventative approach suggests you pay careful attention to every stage of disease development.

Symptoms show you where your body is weakened.
Ultimately, all disease has a root in tissues too weak to defend itself.
Ayurveda describes these patterns of weakness using doshas & biocharacteristics.
If you notice a biocharacteristic or dosha appears next to many of your symptoms,
it helps you establish a pattern that may be systemic.

HOW DOES AYURVEDA WORK?
Ayurveda starts by identifying your body type,
which identifies certain tendencies in your body to get sick (as well as identifying your strengths).
It uses body type to determine the likely root causes of your disorders.
Next, Ayurveda analyzes the nature of your disorder.
It fits all your signs and symptoms into a pattern, expressed as a combination of biocharacteristics (gunas).
For example, you may have a heat disorder, a cold disorder, or an oily disorder, etc.
This simple categorical approach shows you how to correct systemic imbalances and strengthen your body as a whole.
On Joyful Belly, we've created an extensive categorization of food so you can easily match food to your imbalanced biocharacteristics.
By eating an optimal diet that balances your biocharacteristics, your whole body is strengthened
and the conditions that created the disorder are removed. Once the root causes of the disease
are removed, the disease lessens in strength or disappears altogether. Additional remedies -
such as herbs and lifestyle practices - focused on the specific disorder, can greatly enhance
your healing.
