Glaucoma is a serious disease that can cause blindness characterized by increased pressure in the eye. Note there are two types of glaucoma: open angle and closed angle.

In Ayurveda, open angle glaucoma is considered to be an accumulation of kapha. The increased pressure results from debris accumulating at the sight where intraoccular fluid drains from the eye. Herbs that break up masses are thus helpful for open angle glaucoma.

Generally, clearing the debris, reducing high blood pressure is helpful. Foods with vitamin A or vitamin A precursors help the eye.

Avoid caffeine since it reduces healthy blood flow to the eyes. Avoid foods that cause inflammation in your body. Rapidly drinking fluids may raise pressure in the eye. Instead, drink fluids slowly.

Supplements for Glaucoma

Foods high in bioflavonoids reduce free radicals and keep the soft tissues and collagen around the eye flexible and healthy. Strawberries and cirtus fruits are two foods high in bioflavanoids that also help the liver. The liver is connected to the eye - so improving liver health is considered to be a treatment for the eye in Ayurveda.

High-quality fish oils are known to lower eye pressure. Take 2-3 times a week

Chromium is known to help with glaucoma and general ocular hypertension. Foods high in chromium include kelp and other sea vegetables, leafy greens, apples, safflower, and sesame oils.
