Cholesterol functions to repair irritated and inflamed tissues. High cholesterol is often a kapha response to high inflammation. It also strengthens the cell wall. Cholesterol is necessary in the production of main hormones, including stress hormones and the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen. High cholesterol has been implicated in heart disease. Cholesterol levels tend to increase in winter, and decrease in summer? Ayurvedically, high cholesterol is aggravated Kapha in the blood plasma. High cholesterol may also be due to an exhausted liver in Vata types.

Since bile is a primary pathway of cholesterol metabolism in many animals, improving production of bile may reduce cholesterol. A class of herbs, called cholagogues, stimulate production and release of bile. Cholagogues such as dandelion are indicated for high cholesterol by many herbalists.

High fiber can also lower cholesterol. High fiber prevents the re-absorption of bile and cholesterols in the bile. Without fiber, 94% of the bile released into the intestines will be reabsorbed. Those who are trying to flush fatty bile out of the body will need a high fiber diet to prevent the re-absorption.

Low fat diets have been shown to reduce cholesterol. Cholesterol itself contains lipids. So, reduction of fats reduces cholesterol formation.
