TEMPERING INDIGESTION / UPSET STOMACH (from Ayurveda & Greek Medicine)

Indigestion is often the first warning sign of digestive imbalance and can indicate underlying digestive issues.

Kapha type indigestion occurs when excess mucus production in the GI tract, or sluggish peristalsis, makes digestion sluggish. Kapha indigestion is generally remedied with lighter foods, astringents, spicy food, and avoiding late night meals.

Pitta type indigestion occurs when inflammation makes digestion weak and sluggish, or causes burning sensations. This inflammation can come from allergies, infection of the GI, bile reflux, or other causes. Pitta indigestion is generally remedies by cooling foods, anti-parasites and antimicrobials, and by calming the liver.

Vata type indigestion occurs when digestive function is too weak or cold generally (low agni), making digestion sluggish. This can come from anemia (blood deficiency), chronic dehydration (due to peeing too much), or atrophy of the organs themselves. Vata type indigestion is remedied by blood tonics, hydration, and spices and easy to digest foods.

Indigestion can also result from overeating, eating too quickly, eating at the wrong time, or consuming irritating foods.

In all cases, cleaning out the GI tract with a laxative, followed by easy to digest foods, can kick start an improvement in digestion.

The first step to healing is learning patterns from your symptoms. Symptoms are clues that reveal underlying imbalances. Symptoms show you where your body is weakened. Ultimately, all disease has a root in tissues too weak to defend itself. Ayurveda describes these patterns of weakness using doshas & biocharacteristics. If you notice a biocharacteristic or dosha appears next to many of your symptoms, it helps you establish a pattern that may be systemic.
