AYURVEDA PERSPECTIVE ON NON-HEALING SORE / ULCER

A non-healing ulcer or diabetic sore is one that does not respond to initial treatment and persists despite appropriate care. Diabetic ulcers generally tend to develop on the legs and feet due to poor circulation or edema in the lower extremities. When an ulcer forms and the skin is broken, the wound is exposed to air and bacteria, and the underlying tissues are at risk of infection.

In Ayurveda, these types of non-healing ulcers are a Kapha disorder associated with "sweet and thick blood." An ulcer may not heal for several reasons including inflammation, infection, or poor circulation to the affected area. Without ample healthy blood supply, the area won't have sufficient nutrients to heal.

Blood thinners such as manjistha, and circulatory stimulants such as pippali, will improve blood flow. Known as the "sweet killer," gymnema is the top choice in Ayurveda for balancing blood sugar levels and destroying sweet blood. It can also be appropriate in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Avoid rich, sweet foods like ice cream and cheesecake, and favor a Kapha pacifying diet instead.

In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, and in some Californian hospitals, bloodletting (rakta mokshana) is used to detoxify and purify sweet blood. It is also used reduce the risk of amputation in serious cases of non-healing ulcers. Leeches secrete anticoagulants in their saliva that keep blood flow strong to the affected area and prevent tissue death.

As the wound may smell rotten, it should be washed. Topical compresses will aid internal treatment.

Ayurveda strengthens the body while opposing disorders. It takes a holistic, systemic approach that looks at the whole body. Ayurveda shows how to interpret signs and symptoms of imbalance, and how to address them using diet, lifestyle adjustments, and herbs. HOW DOES AYURVEDA WORK?

Ayurveda starts by identifying your body type, which identifies certain tendencies in your body to get sick (as well as identifying your strengths). It uses body type to determine the likely root causes of your disorders. Next, Ayurveda analyzes the nature of your disorder. It fits all your signs and symptoms into a pattern, expressed as a combination of biocharacteristics (gunas). For example, you may have a heat disorder, a cold disorder, or an oily disorder, etc. This simple categorical approach shows you how to correct systemic imbalances and strengthen your body as a whole.

By eating an optimal diet that balances your biocharacteristics, your whole body is strengthened and the conditions that created the disorder are removed. Once the root causes of the disease are removed, the disease lessens in strength or disappears altogether.
