Stretch marks are a result of stress on the skin. When you gain weight too quickly as is often the case in pregnancy, puberty, water retention, traumatic life experiences, or when the skin is stretched too quickly for any reason, it can stress the skin before it has time to expand and adjust, causing small marks, scars, and tears in the skin. They are most common on the belly, thighs, breasts, and occasionally in the arms. Although found on both men and women, more women than men seem to sport these marks.
