Thick mucus is mucus that is viscous, like molasses, instead of watery.
Thicker mucus is generally a sign of "sweeter blood". Sweet blood is blood that is high in sugar, fats, or proteins. Sweet blood plasma (rasa) is thicker than deficient blood plasma and causes mucus. Sweet blood causes thick mucus whereas toxins (ama) generally provokes thinner, clear mucus.
Thick, white or clear mucus is associated with an imbalance in Kapha and can often be traced back to rich diet of sweet, heavy and oily foods. As fluids thicken they increase the wet, cold, and slimy qualities of mucus membranes in the lungs, sinuses, nose (Avalambaka Kapha), and GI (Kledaka Kapha).
This leads to respiratory congestion, runny nose, blocked sinuses and phlegm in the lungs and throat.
To counteract this mucus it's important to avoid sweet Kapha provoking foods like sugar, ice cream, cold milk, cheese and fried foods. Avoid foods that are slimy (demulcent) such as banana and oatmeal.
To burn up the excess sweetness, favor foods that are dry, light, penetrating and hot in quality. Try adding some mustard seeds to your next curry.
Astringents such as cinnamon and cloves are ideal mucolytics, literally breaking up mucus proteins. Pungents such as ginger and black pepper improve blood flow to mucus membranes, enhancing immunity and liquefying mucus. The sour taste of lemon increases secretions which also helps to liquefy mucus for easy removal.
Honey, though sweet, is antimicrobial and warming and will be an aid to the above tea.
Altogether, a tea of cinnamon, black pepper, lemon and honey may be the ideal expectorant and decongestant to help the body spit out, dissolve or dry out mucus. If you have it on hand, add a saponin mucolytic like Mullein as well.
A bronchodilator like Tulsi can also help open up the lungs.
