Wheezing is the sound that happens when air in your lungs moves through constricted or obstructed air passages. Wheezing usually comes from the bronchioles - smaller tubes deeper in the lungs. Wheezing on the exhalation points to bronchiolar disease. On the inhalation stenosis from tumors, foreign bodies or scarring, especially if the wheezing is mono-tonal. Crackles are caused by the "popping open" of small airways and alveoli collapsed by fluid or mucus. The location of the wheezing (heard with a stethoscope or ear to the lung) may indicate the location of the problem. Smoking, asthma, infection, pneumonia and other lung ailments may be causes of wheezing. 2 out of 3 school children with recurrent wheezing/coughing have allergies.
